For those who were trained with it, it instills in the infantryman the ability to close with and destroy the enemy. This fact has not been lost on the British who did a bayonet charge on a numerically superior force in 2005 when ambushed. The charge broke the will of the enemy to stand and fight.
Unfortunately I have herd that the US Army is dropping this in training leaving the Marines as the only one teaching the use of this weapon.
Besides being a weapon it is a useful utility tool.
