  • Food Procurement Methods

    Question;

    What would the prefered method(besides snares/trapping) of taking small game be? Hypothetical situation of a 2-3 day excursion being prolonged into a 5 day to week+ survival situation. Injury or situation at hand will not allow use of fishing or hunting lines, or, just to supplement one's food gathering.

    .22 cal. pistol with CB rounds? Air pistol? Slingshot? Please take into account weight, tactical stealth, effectiveness, etc.

    I think you'd be talking snares and maybe a conibear #110. Here's some info http://www.aircav.com/survival/asch08/asch08p06.html http://www.aircav.com/survival/asch08/asch08p01.html http://www.buckshotscamp.com/Ent-BS-Camp.htm

      The .22 pistol will probably give you the best package of utility and effectiveness of the choices you had mentioned.

        Has anyone found a consistently reliable use for a slingshot??

          A .22LR or an air rifle that is relatively quiet.

          Use the quiet method to snipe birds and other critters so you minimize your noises and avoid detection from other that may be in your AO.

            I've heard of people getting good enough with a slingshot to utilize it on small game, but I'm certainly not. I've been meaning to modify one to shoot arrows and try that out. If it's fairly accurate I think that would make a better game getter than just a small rock.

            I've heard of people using slingshots to lob M-80s into thick brush to scare game out, as well as tossing thin line over tree limbs for raising wire antennas and ropes. This seems to be a better use for the catapult than trying to peg squirrels.

            There's always taking out streetlights, too.
