  • Expiration Dates on Food, What is your best?

Just opened a can of Skippy Peanut Butter that was over a year past it's expiration date. Taste just like any other can of peanut butter. I've dranken Hi-C drink boxes that were 2 years out of date and it still tasted great (a little sediment in the bottom though).

So what's your best? Or do you chuck out any thing that is past it's due date?

    Let's here it!

I use the half rule...i use what i stock.......if i use up half of an item, then it's time to replenish it...i usually buy a case of say canned potatoes....when i get down to half a case i will buy another case to put up and i use the rest of the opened case......if you can make friends with a mom and pop outfit you can get better deals than regular retail if you buy by the case and buy alot like i do.....i have and sometimes do, use out of date good's.....as far as peanut butter go's, if alot of the oil has surfaced to the top, say if you turned the jar upside down and some, even a drop or two, comes out....you can still eat it, but its a good bet it will make you sick.....what i do is, if an item is out of date, i will chew up some of it and hold it in my mouth for 15 min. and i do not swallow....i spit it out...if i do not get sick, i will eat a bite or two and then wait 8 hour's...if i do not get sick, then thats the green lite to eat it.......i often get chips, etc. given to me by the case thats out of date...they are usually good for another couple or three months....i buy my bread from those stores that carry out of date bread...hey for 25 cents a loaf its hard to turn down.......i took some over the counter medicine that was a little more than a year out of date and got pretty sick for a couple of days....i bought it out of date without knowing it..at wally world...every since then i'm leary of ofd med's.......

Good topic. Motley covered the golden rule I have broken until recently, eat what you store. Get used to living out of your stored food. http://www.ext.vt.edu/news/releases/.../shlflife.html
