I've thought the same thing and here's one idea I came up with.
a bar top! first build a lip around the edge of the bar just a little higher than the casings are thick laying on their side.
then lay the casings in a design on the bar.
disigns like a land scape, gun, name, just anything. then when you have it all layed out mix up some fiberglass resin or something like (epoxy) pour over it untill its at the top of your lip around the edge and covering the casings.
when it sets up you have a nice shinny bar top and a conversation piece.
    what ya think?

They really do make good filler when mixing concrete. I have used an odd assortment including .22 and old shotgun hulls. The hulls did not float and the side walk shows no tales of the mix after it is floated. Never thought about it setting off the metal detectors, That is an added bonus.

How about Fishing weights? Just fill em full of whatever you have handy to displace the air. If a guy did want to recycle them, all you'd have to do is walk around the range with a magnet and scrape em off into a bag now and again. Think I'll have to go find a large size magnet and connect it to a handle so that it looks like a metal detector (except in scale of course, the magnet would have to be a lot smaller or you couldn't pack it around without strapping it to the front of your truck... but then again?), probably be real easy that way without always having to stoop over. Hmmm....

I saw an article in an outdoors magazine some years ago about a guy who skinned his deer with a knife made from a BRASS .30-30 case pounded down and sharpened. He'd lost his knife and didn't realize it until after he'd shot the deer. I have tried to do this with brass cases and it can be done, though the edge is understandably short lived. A steel case woud probably yield decent results....

geweher44,you just told on yourself ! lol . i suspect that certain government agencies spend a LOT more time on the web then at the range watching people and picking up their brass, this is a general statement of course.

I have cut the cases to different lengths and made litle pan flutes out of them for the times I fell like being Zamfir.

Hehe, you like that? I s**t you not, I pick up every d**ned case, no lie. My fingerprints are on file (no, don't even think about asking what I did!) and I don't need anyone at .gov doing any "field research" to make up a profile on me.

Just keep the tin-foil hat on and they can't see you.

Very good ideas here. I like the bartop idea Flathead 45.

Make a new foil hat with the steel cases.
