  • What do to with all those unreloadable steel cases?

I see piles of this stuff everywhere at the range, and I am sure that I have created quite a pile myself (in more ways than one).

What to do with all that steel?

It's a waste to leave it there.

Here are some of my ideas of what to do with these little steel cases. Remember, steel might be a commodity someday and that could a value in spent Wolf ammo.

Uses for spent unrealoadable steel cases:

    - Cut the rim off ahead of the lip and drill out the primer. This can be used as a grommet to fix yer boots or for tarps and any leather items you make.

    - Cut the necked-down portion off and the rim and cut the remaining tube down the side and flatten the metal patch out. It can be used to patch up holes in your truck and maybe used to patch holes in storage tanks if welding is possible.

    - Make tubes out of them and weld them toegether, then cut sheets of steel netting from them, or thicker for grating.

    - Can the steel be sharpened? Cutting blades might be possible from these spent cases.

Let's come up with 101 uses for spent unreloadable cases.

Dunno. I see piles of them at the range I goto all the time.

Usually the cad who was there didn't feel like policing his/her own area after the fact.

Basic feelings on scrap steel cases are that they're worthless at this time.
I suppose there are uses for it, but usually the time invested would far outweigh the benefits of such small amounts of metal retreived.

I see even more spent .22 cases. Tens of thousand of them. I've raked and swept, and bagged them up. It might take a truckload to get anything out of it, but it won't rust away while you gather it.

If you have buried a cache or three, take it to the area and broadcast them about...over the other stuff you should have already broadcast. Sends the old metal detectors into a frenzy.

        There is an idea.

A few hundred round here, a few hundred there. Put them back in their old boxes so it looks like a cache to sonar. Great idea.

Would they be worth anything to a scrap dealer?

Or maybe melt them down and then make some good steel that you could build with? Or use it as metal supply for blacksmith stuff?

          Wondering..

Leave them laying at the range???

After coming to AW.net and becoming a nutball, I started picking up every case and taking them home so .gov wouldn't know I was blasting away with a 7.62x39 'ASSAULT GUN'!

I've used the rimmed heads for washers or spacers and have used the casing itself for steel tubing. I suppose you could also drill holes in them and string them together as a necklace, keychain etc. Maybe make dummy rounds out of them. I know some guys who make powder scoops out of empty shells. Just cut the shell to size.

Needle cases, Black powder dipper, Black powder flask spout, modern powders too, for reloading other types.

waxed over match cases, oil bottles, sent bottles, home made camo paint containers (powdered pigment)

These are not tool steel, but cut open you might make needles, fish hooks, hindges made from flat sections and a nail for the pin. Hook and eye for boxes and even assorted ornaments.
Howa 'bout a compass pointer? you can magnatize the steel with a magnet, or rubbing silk socks on it.

Case heads might make great buttons on yer next huntin shirt!

I realy liked the oil lamp one above too!

Melt them down and make AP cores for odd calibers.

they would make a pretty green driveway, if used as gravel. Or maybe a wind chime.

                            OT...sorry.

You should see the brass that gets left at the range around home.

Melt them down and make a steel insert for your kevlar vest.
