  • Space blankets?

Ok, i'm sure I'm not alone here, but anytime i tried using a space blanket for shelter, i froze my keister off. Every time. But, I have never tried a space "bag", never tried one of those plastic covered casualty blankets, and am really wanting to try the Land/Shark Stealth/Bag http://www.corpairparts.com/Stealth-Main.htm. Looks promising, but don't know if I can trust the Soldier of Fortune review. Let me know your findings guys!

I have not tried this particular brand but I have used several space blankets.
It is made to retain, not generate heat so I recomend that it is used on the outmost of the sleeping bag or whatever is worn.

When I used it right, it made a huge difference for me.
One thing that I noticed is that most space blankets are quite easy to rip, so be careful.

The Combat Casualty Blankets that you mentioned have worked great when we went camping. Really helped keep the tent warm as the temp dropped rather low unexpectedly one night and they were used to advantage! I always keep one or even two in the pack cause they are so useful. And regular space blankets too! CHeap and easy to carry.

I would say that a $15 permanent spaceblanket, called a Sportsmans Blanket, adds about 10 degrees of warmth to your sleeping bag (when draped over the outside).

        I always camp with one.

Space blankets work as a vapor barrier. All the moisture you sweat or breath out will either condense on the underside of the blanket or in your clothes. So being damp and cool isn't a good combination. Space blankets work well in severe cold or for the short term. They also work well as a reflector for a fire. Not my primary choice of an overnight blanket. The combat casualty blanket is the better one to use if you must.

Where can you buy these casualty blankets? Sounds like something worth having!
"some people never let their given word interfere if something they want comes along"
The real problem with the world are laws preventing culling.

If you can find one, you might want to look into a
Korean war casualty bag. 7lbs of goose down. It was od and designd to keep casualtys warm in the harsh korean climate.

Adventure Medical makes a blanket and bivy sack out of a product called Thermolite. It insulates about the same as a Space blanket but it doesn't hold the moisture against your body.

Another option is an inexpensive and light sleeping bag. You can pick up a 50 degree bag for around $15 on sale around here. These are warmer than a Space blanket but they take up a little more room.
