  • Antibiotic storage?

I've spent quite a bit lately restocking several different antibiotics so now I'm wondering whats the best storage method? Refrigerated? room temp? Come to think what is the average shelf life? I know Tetracycline and Doxycycline both have limited safe use times but others? No idea

Dark, cool and dry in the original sealed container. Refrigeration would be okay; freezing is questionable, more so if capsules rather than tablets.

The myth of a short shelf life for Tet is just that, a myth. It does NOT become toxic with age. That was the result of ONE report from the early '70's that claimed increased toxicity to the kidneys from expired Tet. The results have not been duplicated and the thought was that it was all due to an additive (proprietary ingredient) used in the original formulation. The formula has very long since been revised and overseas missionaries are not shy about using expired Tet as a result. In fact, they have devised a simple, water-dissolving test as a means of determining if it is still good to go.

As far as shelf life? Even with total bottom-of-the-barrel generics I would feel very safe in adding at least a year to the original label date. Somewhere I have the military's SLEP program results. Only took about a dozen years to find it. (Dunno why they didn't want it released).

I keep my cache of antibiotics in one of my gun safes in a brown paper sack.
