  • RFID range

anyone want to speculate on the range of current commercial RFID tags like those used at highway/bridge toll barriers ? Also, are these actually powered devices, where there's a battery that boosts the response signal, or are they purely driven by the incoming signal ?

    TIA,
    bxn

It is my understanding that Walmart has tested some RFID's tracking them via Satellite.

knowing little about radio, I would think that would require more power for the outbound signal than could be fit in the package. Knowing little about radio...

        oopsie, a web search reveals:
        - a powered/active tag could be read by satellite if it used certain frequencies.
        - highway toll systems are active (have a battery) and have a range of 100 m (!)

thanks for your input/interest, keep it coming.

Most of the RFID tags in Wally world or highway toll are passive. They are excited by the transponder in the facility and emitt a specific signature that can be detected.
Satellite tracking means the facilities transponders are linked by satellite communication. It doesn't mean the satellite is the transponder.

yeah, it just seems to me that to get a signal back to the satellite from a transponder on the ground, either the transponder has to be pretty powerful, even to reach low earth orbit, nevermind geosynchronous, or the satellite's antenna has to be incredibly sensitive, like what only the mil has. Again, I know little about radio fundamentals, and this is extrapolation on that.
