I passed my Extra exam on Saturday morning. I missed 3 questions so I guess I made a 94% on the test. I know a lot of people worry about the math on this test. I did too at first. If you use the Gordon West manual, learn the keystrokes he shows you. I did this and made a simplified equation card on an index card. When you have the equation card made up, begin taking the online practice tests. When you get to one of the math questions, simply apply the simplified equations to the question and work it on the calculator. You will be suprised how easy it gets. I only worked out two of the problems on the blank paper just to be sure of my answer. The others I had worked so many times I could do it in my head and associate my figure to the answer.
I peresonally found subelement 7 hardere than the math because the enormous amount of data concerning practical circuits. You can do this.
One final suggestion is read every single question out of the 801 question pool. This takes out a lot of potential surprises. I have heard of several people who only studied the online practice exams and did not pass the exam. They said afterwards they had not seen a lot of the questions asked on the test. So...it may take longer to study and read the questions but it is better than drawing an exam full of questions you have never seen. 73's around.
Thanks every one for the great suggestions, tips and encouragement. Looks like a few congrats are in order to ASGA and RBL also.
Well it looks like I started this thread over a year ago since that time I kept starting and stopping my studying with the Gordon West book, I just could not seem to get through it. So a little over a month ago I took ZombieAxe's and others suggestion and bought the ARRL book. The ARRL book is great I really got a lot out of it and a much deeper understanding of our hobby, might even buy the tech and general manuals just to review.
RBL's last suggestion was a really good one to study all 801 questions and not rely on the on-line test's, he was right! Probably 1/3 of the questions in my test I never saw on the on-line practice tests.
Well I took the test yesterday 9/11/04 three years after the event that ultimately got me interested in amateur radio and emergency communications and PASSED first try!
Just one more thing THANK YOU all for the help and 73's
