• Help With Extra Class Test

I bought Gordon West's Extra Class book but even with his answer sections my math skills are sadly lacking, the other non math questions are no problem though. Are there any other more detailed learning tools out there? short of memorizing the 801 question pool or going back to school?

Just memorize the formulas. Not every problem. If you know the formula, you can solve any problem they throw at you.

It's been a long time since I looked over an amateur test, but they will undoubtably ask you to solve problems using Ohm's law, and maybe some antenna problems dealing with SWR, or antenna length as a function of transmission wavelength.

They may also ask transmit distance based on known wattage, bandwidth or meter-band, and antenna height above ground.

There are probably other areas I'm missing.

If you don't already know, I will point out that a little diddy that will help you break those math problems down is:

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

It helps to remember which part of the math problem to deal with first, thus assisting you in coming up with the proper answer.

I'll go into more detail if you are interested.

Good luck.

It's simply an acronym for the order of doing a mathematical equation. Do things in this order, as it is the proper order, and it will help you keep your formulas organized and ultimately correct. Now, this is taking into consideration that you have some math ability. I doubt that simply following the acronym will make you Einstein.

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

P= do what is in PARENTHESES first
E= deal with any/all EXPONENTS second
M= then do all items that involve MULTIPLICATION
D= next comes all items that need to be DIVIDED
A= then do all ADDITION
S= and as you probably have figured out, now it's time for SUBTRACTION.

Try this and see if it is helpful at all. I'm no math wiz for sure........but this one little thing made me improve almost immediately upon incorporating it into my thinking. Like I said, you need a background and this is for support.

Good Luck.

Thanks I'll give it a try.
I also found another General ticket ham that wants to upgrade, so it looks like I may get a little help with the math when we start our study sessions.

Try the ARRL's "Now You're Talking" books for Extra class. They are ALOT more detailed explainations than Gordo's books. Glad you are going for Extra Hey Bill, hows your upgrading coming along??? Going to Shelby this year??? 73!

Later,

well you probally wont like my suggestion .. but
.
i am a general class ham , i have always studied just the question and the right answer nothing else..
there are only x number of math questions on any of the tests.
if you study the question and only the right answer your bound to get a few of them correct ..
i belive that i have refrence books for a reason if i need to know a forumala i can go look it up .
how much of the ham stuff from the test have you never ever used .. bunches ..

I am working on my extra now as well I have the Gordon West book and the ARRL extra class manual. The arrl book is well worth the money. The details and the added "readability" really help. I use the GW book as a "test" and review book. Good luck on your test

I studied last weekend for the element 3 (general written) test and passed tonight. I then took the element 4 test without prep and got 28 out of 50. It wasn't as hard as I thought it might be. I don't think that there was more then five math formula questions.

Now comes the code. I've decided to purchase the "code quick" cds.
