Never been really interested in swords, but always been a fan of Cold Steel products!

Yeah they have overall pretty decent products while keeping prices a little below industry average but I have noticed how they have raised prices over the years and people tell me their quality has slipped a bit from what it was in the 1980s.

The thing about swords is that you don't run out of ammo and they are quiet (until people start screaming bloody murder). It's just not the sort of thing you can get away with carrying outside the house.

I have known people who kept them for "apartment defense" in situations where they did not or could not have a gun, or they had serious concerns with overpenetration with any firearm and I could see the sword as something of a useful deterrent.

I'm not a big sword fan either, but something like this might replace my machette on my hiking/backwoods pack.

They are great products but over priced big time.... My cost on these are $140.00 they list for $249.00. The mark up is crazy...

Almost all knives are priced that way...100% markup on cost (or 50% off retail for dealer pricing...same-same).

Overpriced and markup aren't the same thing.

Yeah, just about nobody except the mall shops actually sell for list price. There are a total of two specialty knife shops here in Portland, the mall shop pretty much runs retail and the street shop will sell the Cold Steel stuff around 40% over low wholesale.

They showed me the wholesale books when I made it pretty clear that I knew the business, and Valor Sports out of Florida runs better wholesale pricing than you are likely to get "dealer direct" from Cold Steel, but Cold Steel website specials are genuine good deals, as are their Special Projects factory seconds.

I'll look into Valor...but every knife company I've spoken with, except for Benchmade, has a dealer pricing of 50% of retail. I know that nobody sells for MSRP, street prices seem to be in the 20-30% above wholesale.

Yeah, that's about right, but if you check Valor prices you will find that it is quite likely that other "wholesalers" are probably buying from them. Valor is more strict on who they sell real wholesale to and you will likely have to send them a copy of an FFL and or business license.

I have the 1860 boarding countless.....when I picked it up I thought it was an original......but I eventually found that Navy Arms made a 1860 boarding countless. Mine was just in too good a shape to be real but it is the spitting image of the real 1860.

Cold Steel has little of interest to me these days. Well over 50 bucks for knives made from cheap 440 grade steel, machetes held together with rivets, etc.. It seems they have two classes now, cheap made and overpriced and items of medium quality, overpriced even more.

I like the plain edge recurves, like the Vacquero( Voyager)... but MAN are they tough to re- sharpen....any thoughts? Ceramic sticks in a Lansky turnbox are not working.I turned it over to a friend( does Norse/ Renaissance reenactments) and he can' t get it either.

Tough to find a reasonably priced forged battle-capable sword now days.

I bought a German Bastard sword back in '95. It's been great for practice and will slice you clean in half, bone and all. Just ask the last pig I tried this out on.
