Don't forget revolvers measure differently. It is usually from the forcing cone forward, where on the auto, it is from the breech forward and there is no cylinder gap to rob velocity. That's why physically, your 4" barrel revolvers are usually larger handguns than a 4'5" automatic and give you less velocity out of the same powder load.

I have a snub nosed, 1.78" 30 SPL revolver, how much more impact can I get by getting a 9mm or 357 Magnum?

38 Special: 657 foot pounds energy at muzzle
357 Magnum: 928
9mm Luger: 1132 (using Federal 115gr JHP, don't want to use +P data)
