  • case cleaning - remove walnut dust?

I have been using a Lyman brand case shaker with walnut shell medium. After running the mix of cases and medium for a while I pull out the cases and on the inside of the cases I get a very small amount of walnut dust reside. I am wondering if I should use a water rinse to remove this, or doesn't it matter enough to remove this dust? I am more concerned with safety than anything else.

    Won't hurt a thing.

Add a little liquid car polish & a used dryer sheet & you will have 75% less dust. Still best to dump/separate outdoors because you don't want to breathe the stuff.

Apart from giving my cases a fairly good rattling in the sifter, I've never done anything else. Be it noted. Were I loading for super-precision, I would clean them out first, but for range loads? No biggie.

Having said that, I will also comment that if you are seeing clumping, that would warrant cleaning out, but a little fine dust? That will wind up as micro-particles of carbon. You'll clean them out of your firearm along with the other powder residues, and never notice the difference.

I blow my cases out with an air compressor and a straw inserted into the cases.

This is now simply a habit that I take with all my reloading cases. The jewelers rouge is my larger concern in leaving a fine film of this in the cases. It doesn't burn except at a very high heat and it still acts as a very fine polishing grit even when burnt.
It's my understanding that when ever polishing metal, some of the surface is removed. I just don't wish to polish the bores of my firearms any faster than I need to. I don't wash my cases because I'd rather not get them wet, and risk any tarnishing, and then having to dry them anyway.

But I'm fairly "picky" when it comes to my reloads. YMMV

Change the media from walnut to corn cob.

I use a 40/60 mix of Lyman Treated Corn Cob and corn blast and thrown in a couple of USED Bounce dryer sheets.

Once it takes longer than 4hrs to clean the brass, I replace it with new media.

Switch to Lyman corn cob green, the red stuff sucks.
