  • Answer me this................

A few ammo companies are venturing forward with producing obsolete ammo..ie...prvi in 8mm Lebel. I shoot it in my 1890 Berthier 8mm Lebel.

Well, we all know ammo made now is more powerful, per se, than that made around WWI or so.

Soooooo.....they should be compensating for that. Right?

Cut to the chase. 6.5 Carcano ammo was used in WWI and was suitable for the rifles then. Including rifles converted from Black Powder to shoot the smokeless 6.5. It was safe then.
Is it safe now? For my Vetterli?

See post in Moisin/Mauser, but the Vetts are getting WAY up there in age, quality of metal, etc. May be a case by case basis, but mine's a wall hanger now, use only if no other firearms are available.

Those older guns are worriesome to me. I had a 1916 Spanish that was beautiful but being in .308 I thought it best to not shoot it because of the potential of Kaboom. A buddy was severely injured by his 1916 Spanish mauser that was in 7mm. Supposedly the best of the bunch when it comes to having the lesser chance of Kabooms. Factory ammo was all he was using. The gun cocks on closing and the on;ly thing I can figure is that there was a head space issue or it dropped the firing pin before he got the bolt fully closed. Either way the gun was totally destroyed. He got gun frags all in his arms and face. Thnak God for Safety glasses. Only had a few small frags in his eye lid.

Now large ring mausers I would think they would be good to go. As long as head space checks out that is.

Yeah.....I'm really just fishing. Have some original OLD ammo coming but think it wise to just dump some powder anyhow.
        Thanks fellas!
