  • Surplus Malaysian .308 any good?

AimSurplus has this stuff advertised as 1980s surplus. It'd be used just for plinking, but I don't need any extra practice tearing down a weapon to get the gunk out. It's $124.95 for 300 rounds or $359.85 for 900 rounds. Its close to the price 1990s German DAG .308 surplus was running. Anybody have experience with this ammo?

I don't remember seeing any around in a good while. The last time I can remember hearing of any was back in 2000 or so, and reports were mixed on it at that time.

As I remember, it wasn't terribly dirty or anything, but it had something of a reputation for not going bang occasionally. I can't remember shooting too much of it. (IIRC, I split a 500 round order with a buddy of mine) I wasn't too unhappy with it, but it ran about 5% failures to fire, the way I'm remembering it.

FWIW, I'd also suspect it of having corrosive primers. That's not a huge problem with range ammo for me, but it's something that you ought to consider before you decide just how inexpensive it is.

Not trying to sound too much like a smartazz but being totally honest I value my face and my firearms too much to shoot ANY more third world ammo. Last bunch of that stuff I got hold of had a tendency to blow primers.

I think you're right. I'll steer clear of third world ammo.

Thanks for reminding me that I should not buy ammo from places where I would not drink the water.

Are you talking about Singapore, or Malaysia?

They are two different places, actually.

'Nough said on that topic. I know a lot of people who have made the same mistake, so I'm not trying to be a gronch about it, but Singapore ammo is not Malaysian ammo, just for the record.
