  • Russian Golden Tiger 7.62x39 quality

I picked up a thousand rounds of Russian made 7.62x39 FMJ ammo today. Brand name: "Golden Tiger" I was told that Golden Tiger is of similar quality to Wolf Brand. Paid an outrageous $250 out the door for the case.

I remember buying Wolf ten years ago for under a hundred bucks.

Anybody have any experience with Golden Tiger?

Manufactured at the Vympel plant in eastern Russia. Like ALL Russian ammo, you'll likely receive a dozen different opinions as to its quality, any that state its top quality stuff I'd have to question. Barnaul is usually/sometimes considered the best of the breed, all others a notch or two below. That ANY of us have stocked Russian ammo for use ISHTF really speaks volumes of both the price and lack of availability of any really good 7.62x39 ammo. I've never seen the advantage of a $700+ rifle over the cheapest if all thats gonna be used is crappy Russian ammo.

Paintballmagnet, Speaking of Russian ammo, I wished I had purchased Wolf 9mm instead of the Winchester White box I purchased at Wallyworld recently. I opened one of the boxes when I got home and there is this black crud on the brass case part of the cartridge. I tried to wipe it off with a rag, and brush it off with a bronze brush, but it won't come off. I called Walmart, talked to the manager of sporting goods, who told me- "No exchange on ammo, period." I did not bother to check the ammo before I bought it. I figure Winchester, a reputable US manufacturer, purchased new from a retailer, no problems. Guess again. If I had purchased Wolf 9mm from the same neighborhood gun store I purchased the Golden Tiger from, I would not be having this issue. I don't reload, so I am not sure what this black crud is, some byproduct from the manufacturing process?

On the AK ammo, I know that Kokalis wrote that the AK is about as accurate as an M-16. The only problem is the lack of availability of match grade ammo for the AK.

It is not top of the line ammo.
But it is fine for target and for a ITSHTF issue or survival hunting.
Russian ammo has done the job on battlefields all over the world.
If I were Bill Gates, I would stockpile only the best Swiss or US Ammo, since I am not, I would rather have the extra Russian ammo than no ammo.

Karl, thank you. That is what I needed to know. At least there is no crud/corrosion on the Russian ammo. You have to buy US made Winchester white box 9mm at your local Walmart to get that! Disgusting.

I really don't care for the WW, UMC or Federal we're now getting. Quality is not what it was just a couple years ago.

I bought some golden tiger from gander mountain one time, seemed just as good as any of the other russian stuff.

I think AIM has about the best price on Golden Tiger right now.
Even with shipping you could have saved at least $50.00.

I've got about 2,500 rounds of the Golden Tiger. I actually prefer it to Wolf. For me it seems to burn a little cleaner, and it cleans up a bit easier. I got mine from J&G Sales last year. For some reason they no longer carry it. Bill T.

You are right billt Golden Tiger does burn a little cleaner a little hotter too.
I still have 2K I picked years ago for only $143 per 1K just wish it would go that low again.
