  • Barnaul 7.62x39 HP ballistic test - take two

Well went to the range again today, and conducted another ballistic test.

    Ammo - Barnaul 7.62x39 123grain HP ammo.

Test Medium - 5 each 1 gallon milk jugs filled with water. Jugs 1"-2" apart, lined up in a column, enclosed in a cardboard box (open front).

    Distance - 100 meters

    Barrel Length - 16.25" (SAR-1)

Results - I hit high (damn iron sights!), hitting the top of the front jug, the bullet passed through no more than 3" before exiting (leaving a ragged poke-hole).

The second jug was also punctured leaving a poke-hole and the copper jacket was recovered in this jug. It had been shorn off in mostly one peice, but not complete. Twisted and ugly it was about the length of the slug.

The third jug was burst more violently, as was the fourth.

The fifth jug was missed entirely and the bullet exited the rear of the box (duh).

The "exit wound" suffered by the poor cardboard box showed that the bullet had yawed and left a profile imprint, a little over an inch long (horizontal).

    Oops, forgot to add

Thre were small bits of the jacket on the rear wall of the box, didn't penetrate the cardboard though.

i think your getting a sample of just how aggrevating this can get ... with pieces of jacket stuck in the cardboard (mostly , arrested by the water) , something happend . which is more than i could say about the 125grn Barnaul and 122grn Chinese SPs' at that distance into just waterjugs .

The "exit wound" suffered by the poor cardboard box showed that the bullet had yawed and left a profile imprint, a little over an inch long (horizontal).
thats odd , the unfired bullet is only what , 0.860"/0.870" long . the B brand softpoint recoverd from this was .700" long , inside its jacket and all . are you sure your not lookin at a frisbee hole ? that is , the core turned inside out , flying sideways ?

how's your bones these days ? should be good and strong after all that milk

dont feel like the LoneRanger , i've screwed up over 50 waterjugs in one afternoon and walked away with nothing but 'fun' under my belt and blank notebook pages although i often have more goodluck than not since putting Freds 'Riflemans' training to practice years ago . you know , the 'ole "the more i practise - the luckyer i gets" thing .

got a line on a 'lifetime supply' of empty ICE MOUNTAIN waterjugs that are SQUARISH . the square part being 6"h x 6"w x 5.5"d for some 300M tests . they otta stack nice (12"x12" center) and are just as flimsy as the milkjugs to my BBgun .

Sorry, I should have measured it. I guessed it was about an inch long. It looked to me to be the normal length of the projectile.

My wife and two daughters (ages 7 & 2) drink a ton of milk, nearly 1 gallon a day.

I'm actually a decent shot with a rifle (recently shot expert with the M-4 in the military). My iron sights on my AK are just set too high, and I can't adjust them any better (the front sight post may as well be welded in place), and I've had to "walk" my shots down to my target (that's why I hit high, even while aiming more than a foot below the jugs). I just got a PK-AS red/black dot russian scope from www.FreedomOptics.com so I expect better results in the future.

This is the second time I've tried to edit my first post and instead quoted the whole darn thing.

I was trying to edit this in (in refrence to the 2nd jug)

(edit to add - this jug was also pierced near the top like the first one)

Thanks for your report. It seems Barnaul FMJ is sometimes backordered and any dope on the HP is welcome.
Have you tried some PB Blaster or similar on the front site post?

I've tried some "Tri-flow penetrating oil the other night, and broke yet another screwdriver trying to budge it, with no luck.

What is PB Blaster, and where do they sell it?

The underside of the frontsight post is slotted like a regular screw. I've alrady broken three, count'em THREE regular front sight adjustment tools trying to adjust it the normal way. Did they WELD some of these things in or what?!?

My understanding is the front sight post is split, not slotted, so take care working from below. Maybe some heat then cooling to break the grip.
