  • New form-1 rimfire can

    I made a 2nd .22 can & it turned out great. All titanium build, 8 K baffles, 1" OD, 7" length.

Crappy video shot at night. 1st shot unsuppressed, 5 on a Savage 62, 5 on a 22/45. Works very well on pistol or rifle. My first one works great on a pistol but isn't as good on a rifle.

    Looks and sounds great.
    I was bored shooting 50 bmg rifles so I bought a 20mm!

Beautiful finish. What Ti alloy? 3Al2.5V?

Ti can be a pain to turn and single-point thread.

          Grade 9 tube - 3AL-2.5V, Grade 5 internals - 6AL-4V.

I use anti-seize on the endcap threads to prevent the Ti-Ti galling.

That picture was after firing about 200 rds then cleaning! If I were smarter I'd have taken pics before shooting it at all. Ti might be a bear to machine, but it does leave a great surface finish. In all, I'd rather work with Ti than something like 316 stainless. I have a fairly inexpensive threading tool from Mesa Tool that uses an indexable insert. It cuts single point threads in Ti wonderfully!

This is straight off the lathe - a test piece of 6AL4V Ti. I degreased the part, but no scotchbrite, thread file, wire brush, etc.

Here's a closeup of a couple baffles. I think the machining turned out really well. I'm not a machinist, just a hobbyist learning as I go, but each project seems to turn out a little better than the last. Should have a 9mm to share with you guys soon. Almost done with it.

Great work for "not a machinist"! What sort of machine are you using? I've been looking at mini mills lately for messing around with.

              Thanks.

I have a 14x40 geared head lathe & a 8x26 knee mill. Different brand but real similar to a Grizzly G4003G lathe & G3102 mill.

Very nice can, and nice pics too. Looking forward to more stuff from you!

I'm a C2 SOT with a 14x40 lathe and 9x20 mill, but can barely make stuff round and flat. Just no time to read & watch, let alone practice.

So please post more as you do more builds so we can enjoy.

The threads look like a pro cut them. Nice job.

I made a Anschutz style adjustable butthook for one of my Anschutz intermediate target rifles from 304 and 316 stainless. Smearing, galling...a nightmare to work with, but that butthook looks better than any factory anodized aluminum job I've seen.

I'll have to weight my aluminum Tactical Innovations rimfire can and see how it compares. Sure wish it would take the heat a Ti can will.

The 6-baffle TAC-65 is listed at 4.1 ounces. For the extra 1.6 ounces Ti buys better heat tolerance and light years more durability over anodized aluminum.

Let's see your 9 MM! That's going to very cool.

                        Re: New form-1 rimfire can

Depends on what material I use. Huge difference in price between a 2024 aluminum tube vs a grade 9 titanium tube of the same size. Grade 5 titanium barstock in 1.5" diameter is about $150/foot, 4140 chrome-moly is $21/foot, & 7075 aluminum is about $13/foot.

I don't make them to save money. I'd have to make upwards of 100 just to break even on the lathe & mill & probably 100 more to break even on the tooling . Just projects I enjoy doing.

Did I show you guys my 10/22 integral project?

is the 10/22 able to take bulk pack high velocity and bleed off enough gas so it is subsonic?

Yep. The barrel is pretty short behind the core. If it will stay SS from a pistol, it will probably stay SS thru this.

But it cycles CCI Std Velocity just fine.
