  • My Mini 14 at the Range

took the old Mini to the range the other day. I was pleased with the Vortex Strikefire that I am using, and shot some decent three shot groups at 75 yards. These were shot while standing, not from the bench.
    Ammo was Lake City M193.

Hi, Nice groups for standing! Is anything done to the rifle, or is it stock?
Mini-14's don't go over very well on other websites (LOL), I'm glad to see a website with a forum for them! I put a link to this site on my website.

it's stock, other than a trigger job by GunDoc, and the flash hider. I have always felt that the flash hider helped with accuracy, as it added weight to the barrel.

I laugh when some ARF.com type starts ranting about how bad the Ruger is. Of the 1/2 dozen I've owned and sold, accuracy issues NEVER entered into my reason for selling. Magazine availability did. All mine were more than accurate enough to keep someones head down at 300 yards, good enough for me to haul my rear somewhere else. Now that mags are available, I REALLY wish I'd kept that last stainless model I had.

I never had a problem buying magazines. Even at the height of the AWB, I found 5 factory 30 round magazines, still in the factory blister packs, at an antique store. Bought all 5 for $100. They were selling at gun shows then for $150 EACH.

Very nice groups. Have you ever fired a Mini-30?? Is the accuracy comparable, I wonder??

shot a mini 30 just once. I did not think it was very accurate at all. From what I understand, the barrel is .308, while most 7.62X39 ammo is more like .311

The fellow that let me shoot his, says now that if he handloads with a good .308 bullet, it shoots fair.

Mini 14's are very handy, lightweight rifles. Mine had the regular wood stock and it just pointed so fast. I wish I would've kept it, but the mag prices are just horrible. If you are one of those people that is happy with 2 mags then its all good. Not for me.

Not sure if anyone is interested, but I used to have a pretty customized stainless Mini-14 that got confiscated by the BATfags. A judge ruled that the gun collection they took was worth more than the fines for my NFA violations, so she ordered the feds to give back the accessories. I have an older style aimpoint on a B-Square mount around here somewhere for it, and some mags that are guaranteed to work. Three Thermolds (very hard to get and 100% reliable), then a Ram-line (fees fine, but does not always activate the bolt hold open) and two stainless no-name brand mags, I went through a bunch of them in order to get two out of the batch that would actually function in the gun. One 40 rounder and a 20 rounder.
