I guess I must be a hard core mini14 guy. I have one of those stocks that was used on the guns that were made up for Total Recall. I bought it from Sunset Weapons years ago. It has been modified to work with the AC556K. Thx-Ace

I think the Total Recall guns and the Starship troopers guns were the same guns, but stuff was added to them for the Starship troopers movies.

Apparently most of the Hollywood blank guns are concentrated among six movie gun companies that have been in the business for a while and retain NFA licenses which are good in CA under a series of special exemptions (and believe it or not California IS an NFA state). CA even has special exemptions for felons to have access to NFA weapons as long as they are in movie production.

Modern productions have been shifting toward airsoft and dedicated blank guns, so you see a lot of the hollywood prop guns entering the NFA market since most of them are pre-86 guns anyway and the California NFA rules also changed a lot in 1986.

Most of what we have seen on the set of Leverage were airsoft and rubber duck guns, although they have had some dedicated blank shooters I never got to handle. The knives are usually real, just not sharpened.

          RT,

Out of curiosity, how well do the Ruger Mini-14 rifles handle when they are put into the Muzzelite MZ-14 bullpup stocks? I remember handling a Muzzelite MZ-14 bullpup stock at a Brisbane gun show back in 2008 and I thought that they were pretty cool to have if the bans on semi-auto rifles in Australia were lifted and Mini-14s were made legal again.

If Australia's laws were different, I woudl definately trick up my Ruger Mini-14 bullpup rifle tolook like one of the Ruger bullpup rifles seen in Total Recall.

I am left handed so I never took to that type of bull pup very well. Generally speaking, the gun will do better if you put a longer, heavier barrel on it also, but then again I have had the same opinion of the AUG. The Total recall variants were AC-556 rifles which have a shorter barrel than a regular Mini-14 and I think the barrels may not have even been long enough to stick out of the stocks. The Starship troopers guns (same guns, modified) were a mix of full and semiauto, depending on who was doing what in a particular scene. Realize when you are talking about guns semi-permanently set up for blank fire, you can just screw on a barrel extension and it does not even have to be steel to get the desired effect.

There is a special effects technique that involves making a digital copy of a muzzle flash and even the sound effect of a gun to make the cycle rate on screen seem faster than it really is. There are a few ways of doing it, but you can sometimes spot it on screen if you notice the brass coming out of the ejection port is not flowing out at the same rate you hear the shots and see the muzzle flashes. Lower budget films using airsoft will of course have no flying brass, but even the TV productions do a lot with it just added in. They use real blank guns and airsoft on the Stargate shows, but you can look for the brass to see whether or not it is the airsoft or blank shooter P-90s. From what I am told, all of the blank shooter P-90s are real guns but their Berettas are said to be dedicated factory blank shooters.

Had the chance to get familiar with an AUG "light support weapon" some years ago, and with the longer heavier barrel it balanced quite well.

You have a good memory RT because my stock has been modified for a short barrel (you can tell buy the cuts and they told me also). I think they used the AC556K but I am not sure. The only mini I had back then that wasn't already modified was a GB. It would not fit because of the front sight/bayo lug.

I need to dig that old stock back out. It is in the back of my shop somewhere behind some tractor parts...

I still love the mini14 rifles but have gotten more interested in the AR & AK since the AW ban lifted. I really got pissed at ruger for limiting the sales of their High Cap mini mags after the AW sunset and have not really gotten over it yet. I have bought some of their high caps recently though.

                Thx-Ace

You should dig up that old Muzzelite stock and take a few snapshots of it, acem . Myself and the others here would love to see it for ourselves

On another note, here's another video I've found on YouTube back in 2008 that would interest you...

Re: Real Starship Troopers Morita Rifle

Where did he come up with that uniform stuff? He must be a REAL fan.

I found the stock and brought it home (it is quite dusty). My stock is black (the one in the video is green). I do not have the mag cover shown in the video. The rear of the ejection port area has been opened up for the AC556 selector switch. There is a cut in the top of the bbl area so the AC556K front sight can fit (it is located on the top of the gas block). There are also some other minor customizations to the stock.

I will get a picture up when I can find my digital camera. I can't find anything since I moved into the house...

                    Thx-Ace

Re: Real Starship Troopers Morita Rifle

Starship troopers was one of Heinlins best books. They butchered the story to make the movie. The animated series was better than the actual movie, and the movie sequelss are so bad I won't let my youngest watch #2. alot of it is just an excuse for T&A. #3 was real low budget but at least had the original actor who played Johnny Rico. It was strictly a B movie.

The gunplay was ridiculas and the props were amatuerish. I would love to see a faithful production of some of Heinlin's books, but he was so pollitically incorrect (some of his books were overtly racsist) that it'll never happen.

I know the guy that owns the Hero Mortia, he is a big collector of SST items.

There are alot of props and MI trooper set ups from this movie, they will cost about $1,700 for an average suit.
