I've owned seven or eight Mini's over the years, none shot great from the box but would not do worse than 5" with a hot barrel. I cut a stainless to 16", added a home built brake that used an AR-15 front post, my groups shrank by at least 1/3. The magazine issue killed them for me, at the price Ruger is getting for them now, as far as I'm concerned its still a dead issue.

The real problem with the world are laws preventing culling.

Ruger could have do so much more with this design.... and didn't. Now go price a new Mini-14 vs an AR, NO BRAINER. Such a shame.

In some places people soil themselves at the sight of an AR. A Mini does the same job without the BS. There is a lot of back story but I'm not in the mood to detail it to respond to your retard post.

I guess I'm a "retard" too then because I think the AR is superior to the mini in almost every way, with fewer issues than the the mini. Since cost is all but equal now adays, that seems like a no brainer to me too unless:

            1) You live somewhere ARs are banned
            2) You are afraid of presenting the "wrong image" by having a military style weapon.
            3) You like the asthetics of the mini and value style over function.
            4) Your primary concern is being able to shoot dirty poorly manufactured ammo and refuse to own a foreign designed rifle made for it.

The mini might be able to do a few jobs as well as an AR, but it cannot do the same job ARs are employed to do.

That pretty much sums it up right there. I found out factory mags are pretty much going to be available as a shelf item at a lot of places here which carry other Ruger products.

I was fortunate enough to have one of the pick of the litter (purely luck) Mini-14s once that I ended up selling to another board member here. If you can find Thermold magazines made for the Mini-14, they are ever bit as good as the factory mags.

Another custom Mini that I kept until it was stolen by the government was one which I had set up with a sidefolding stock, and the barrel cut down to around 15" so that with the flash hider it was 16", and in all stainless and polymers except for a few springs and some aluminum in the scope mount, the gun was then something that could get small for storage and last a long time without major cosmoline prep. That is one issue which puts them pretty high on the list for boat guns, although boat gun duty is also the venue of chromed AKs.

Thing is nowdays, you can get sidefolding .223 rifles but back when I got that Mini-14, it was pretty much the only game in town if you wanted a .223 which could get right in at that 26.5" when folded. now you have more options, but in the 1990s, that was pretty much it. People were not doing 922r compliant sidefolder AKs, the Daewoos were pretty much gone, ARs don't stay legal when under 30", nothing else out there was really rustproof.

I know Brownells eventually came out with 20" heavy barrels for Mini-14s but they have not been incredibly popular since Ruger raised their prices (hence new Mini-14 and a converision stock and barrel cost more than a heavy barrel AR), but there was a time when that was a valid option for people in California who wanted a semiauto legal .223, and if they had "illegal" magazines, they would be easier to hide than a whole rifle, and anyone could still take their regular Mini-14 with ten shot mags to the shooting range, which I think is a better option than those castrated ARs.
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of those who threaten them.

yep, when you could get a used Mini-14 for $300 or a bit less, and toss it into the truck as a coyote rifle, it made a little sense. I never thought highly of the front sight, the buttstock, the safety, the lack of a roller cam on the bolt, the trigger pull, or the magazine problems.

Is there anything the mini can do better than a Keltec SU16?
