  • Modifying the Mini 14 gas system

In reading the Shotgun news I noticed a gas regulating system for sale. Cost is $89.00. This shows a set screw which limits the amount of gas. Has anyone tried this or modifying their own rifle in a similar fashion.

No, but I have heard of expanded port gas blocks. But yours sounds much cooler. If you get it, post back and tell us how it is.

The standard way of regulating the Mini gas system is with reduced size inserts. Inside the standard Mini gas block is a small metal disk with a hole in it. (believe it's call the the gas port bushing?)

The stock Ruger bushing is rather large. To reduce the enthusiasm with which the op rod spacks back into the reciever, several people make bushings with smaller holes. Smaller holes = less gas = softer action.

The option you are talking about is similar, but instead of trading fixed bushings, you have a small valve controlling the amount of gas let into the system. If it will stay were where you put it, I can see it being a nice option to adjust for maximum softness over a variety of specialty loads. If you stick to standard loadings, you might be better served by a less expensive fixed bushing.

This the one? (Halfway down the page.)

I like the drilled out hole for the aftermarket swivel.

Yes that is the system I saw in the shotgun news. Makes sense. I would like to know if anyone on the board has tried this or has a friend that has one before I buy.

              Motocop,

There is a thread on Perfect Union. Guy posted on 12/29 - so hasn't used it much yet. I think I will bump that thread soon to see how he likes it.

So what does 'bump' mean? I looked at that thread and all you did was type "bump".
Not sure what that does. But it did make me look at the thread. I want to get an adjustable gas block for my MINI-14 as well.

                Happy Shooting!

bump = tack on a null-content post to 'bump' the thread back to the top of the forum
