  • ? about Mini-14 180series serical number rifles

I am looking into buying a Mini-14 that a local guy is selling, It has an 180 series serial number. Meaning it was the 1st versions made. It has a wood folding stock. It has not been fired in over 15 years. I am very interestd in this because I live in a state that still has a assault weapons ban. I would like to have a folding stock but all the stores around me are selling prebans for over $800. I can get the mini for about $575, Including 9 preban 20round mags and 4 PMI 40 rounders still in the wrapper. To me this seems like a good deal. But I wanted to see what you guys thought. I have heard mixed reviews on the 180 series mini's.

Parts will be the biggest problem with a 180 series Mini. I don't know if the factory has much left for that model. Of course, if it runs well and is the right price, then maybe you can hope for no serious breakages... Do you intend this to be a case-a-year or case-a-month rifle?

Accessories will be a challenge too, though you way it already has a folding stock, so there's not a lot that you'd need or want to add.

Are those 9 pre-ban 20's Ruger or aftermarket? Even aftermarket, they add a nice bit to the deal. If they are factory, I'd really, really consider buying the package.

They are preban mags but not factory. I will probaby shoot it 3 times a month maybe more when it becomes nice weather. I am begining to look away from this deal becuase I will be introuble if I need a part and things may break considering I will be putting alot of rounds through it. But all the other preban folders are atleast $750. I really wanted an AR but when I saw this it seemed too good to pass up.

You might want to contact the Ruger customer service people and ask if they can still repair that rifle.

You might want to ask about this over at PerfectUnion.com... they have a pretty active Mini board there.

I have a 180 series Mini - got it in 1977 and have put thousands of rounds through it in the last 28 years without incident. It still groups as well as the day I bought it. I planned on retiring it a few years ago & bought a stainless ranch rifle - what a disappointment. sold the ranch rifle & kept the 180. I'm not especially worried about mine breaking down anytime soon; close inspection during disassembly & cleaning would show any parts prone to failing.

IMO, if the price is right, buy it and shoot it a lot. It is more accurate & consistient shooting than the newer versions that vertically string as they heat up.
