  • Wood for your G3/HK91/PTR91

I asked a question about the feasibility of making a wide hand guard out of wood for the 91 series rifles. I was told no one that anyone knew of had ever attempted this project.

Here is the design that one member at HK Pro created in Photoshop.

I love it. I have always liked wood on my rifles, but I'm not crazy about the slim wooden hand guard commonly found on the CETME and early G3 rifles.

I'm seriously considering sourcing a blank of English walnut and hand carving one of these. I have a plastic model to use as a guide if I decide to go farward with this.

I LOVE IT!!! another new project. Challenge accepted!

I'm thinking that if I have a bunch of things going on, I can't die.

I contacted a master stockmaker over on Militaryfirearm.com that has been making all sorts of stuff the factory never thought about.

This guy has made wide handguards for the G3 in the past, but he's time limited now. He has done beautiful work on other FAL and HK projects that look like living room furniture.

I'm waiting to hear back from him if he is going to take on my project. We have been talking.

I sincerely hope he does take on your project! A wood wide handguard would be a welcome addition for them. Is there a chance of one like the plastic one H&K makes so you can still use the bipod?

He said he would do it for $150. But did not give a time frame. He said he has a couple of guys waiting for other parts for nearly two years now so I'm not holding my breath.

The bi-pod is debatable. Have to figure out a secure way to attach the front end steel to withstand the recoil while the rifle is resting on the bi-pod.

I told him it didn't matter. If needs be, I'll figure out a way to attach it myself. I'm thinking a combination of rivets and epoxy.

We have a show in a few weeks, I'm looking for a wide hand guard. The one my PTR came with was a slim line and there isn't any heat shield. I know that they should have some kind of metal reflector between the barrel and the plastic. It does get warm after a few magazines.

I agree with the attachment method, but think you need to use screw rivets because I think it would be prudent to be able to clean the gun well and insure there isn't any water hiding somewhere in the gun. This way everything can be disassembled for cleaning. Epoxy does a good job if the design needs to be solid.

I like the wide metal handguard PTR makes. Looks cool and functions fine.

I really don't care for wood on firearms.

Well, I scored at the big gun show!!! I got a wide fore-guard. It's a...I have no idea...manufacturer? There wasn't a heat shield, there wasn't a tab to hold a bipod. Bipod you say!!! score now I need to figure out how to put a meal tab in place to secure the bipod into the slot. Time for me to put my skills to use. Total cost 35$ I'm thinking some pop-rivets and sheet metal for the shield and tab. Now I need to get into this picture thing. Worst case, I will ditch the plastic and use the metal parts to make this legendary wood grip. Need to learn how to post images.
