Re: whats going on with PTR?

You'll probably do better price-wise from Robert at RTG.

Bi-pods are $80. Wide hand guards can be found on GB for $80 brand new. Probably POF, but still made under license.

No specials at the show. I got some TULA steel case because what I understand is the cases will be dented up when fired and I want to make sure it works well before I get into modifications. Besides the show didn't even have magazines let alone parts.

        Agreed, forgot to mention RTG.

But I think you can order a PTR 91 with wide handguards and the bipod attachment.

My SAR-8 (Greek H&K 91) had wide handguards but no bipod attachment.

I sold my wide handguards without bipod attachment on gunbroker so make sure they can accept the bipod.

Most of them do come with the mount intact. Sometime back during the AWB some thought that was one of the evil features and a lot of them were milled off and refinished even though the mount wasn't on the list.

I am to pick up the rifle at the FFL come Monday, I think its just a regular rifle no wide hand guard or rails. I don't know if it has the fire/safe or the 3 selector. From the description its just a stock rifle. Found out that there is a less expensive model that uses surplus parts they call it a GI model. NRA rated as a good rifle. I think the standard is a step up, not sure we will see.

So the gun is in, but the dealer said to come by tomorrow. Is the instant background system not working today? She can't do the transfer until tomorrow.

Re: whats going on with PTR?

Mine is a GI. The only difference is the finish. Yours should be painted (and no rail), mine is Parked with the rail.

You can get your model with or without the rail. Same as mine.

The way you see mine in past photos is not the way it came. I had to add the wide handguard, bi-pod, grenade launcher ring, retractible stock, etc.

Mine minus the rail was the same rifle you see in news reports in Third World countries these days.

There's not much to tear down, but a word of caution: Do not lock the bolt with the bolt carrier/bolt out of the rifle receiver. It's a real bitch to unlock.

Stock comes off, lower comes off, bolt/bolt carrier comes out and you are done.

If the gap on the bolt head/carrier is correct it will be a very smooth recoiling shooter. You'll think it's in slow motion when you feel it. It is not the bone-jarring recoil everyone thinks it is.

Re: whats going on with PTR?

This is a nice rifle, it must have been test fired because it came with a target that had been punched 3 times probably 1/4 of an inch between the shots two almost overlapped.

Black case, black rifle, trigger is metal but it looked like a molded plastic enclosure, Safe and Fire. Seems pretty solid. The two pins that hold the stock on were tough to get out and getting the stock to slide off wasn't easy. (I had to pull the cocking lever to get it to inch out but then it popped across the table) Very little carbon and well oiled. The front slim stock had no insulation it was bare plastic and I read enough to know there should be some kind of shield to protect the hand guard. This model didn't have it. I put it all back together there were very few parts. Front stock a weird bolt and the front part twists some, (I guess that's how it ejects shells) the trigger part then the spring and stock assembly. 3 pins and it looks easy to maintain.

Once I figure out how to upload images I honestly want opinions. If this works like it looks all will be good. I want to get some range time in this weekend it will be 60 something but right now we are at 10 degrees. I can wait for warmer weather we are weird like that.

Re: whats going on with PTR?

I forgot yours comes with the plastic trigger pack housing. Mine is metal. The military issue rifles came with the metal housing.

I may switch over to a plastic housing if I can't find a clipped and pinned metal housing.

Clipped and pinned means that the ears that were on the lower that used a push pin to attach to the upper have not been cut off. The lower has the normal clip shelf welded in, and a pin head and tail have been welded into the ear holes.

When the rifle lower is assembled it looks like it originally did with the hinged lower. They cannot build the semi-auto rifle with a hinged lower though, because it would allow a full-auto trigger pack to be installed. The way the upper receiver is built doesn't allow a full auto pack to be installed.

They only recently started putting the paddle mag release on these rifles last year after getting ATF permission to use a blind hole to install them and then welding over the other hole. This is where the push pin for the lower would install.

The only thing a clipped and pinned lower does is make the rifle look more authentic as it was originally designed and covers that bare spot on the upper receiver where it attaches.

                      Clipped and pinned metal lower:

Original attachment of the lower for full auto operation:

Re: whats going on with PTR?

PTR's website is up today. The new product line does not show my rifle so it's already a collectable.

                        http://www.ptr-us.com/

I don't like how they removed Trump's endorsement from the media section and can't figure out why their online parts store isn't available.

New toys but they aren't making some of the ones I saw last year.

The PTR MSG-91 is missing retail $1450 in its place is the PTR MSG, but the reviews on its accuracy from other gun sites say a regular rifle outshoots it for half the price. (Barrel is 18" with a flash hider that affects accuracy)

They have corrected its flaws by bringing back the PTR SS with a 20" free floating barrel without a flash hider and recessed crown to increase accuracy, they also tuned the trigger which the MSG doesn't have.

I'm going to wait and see how this thing performs this weekend then probably get the GI without the rails so I can have a different trigger housing and get the look of a 3 selector even if it's only cosmetic.

I do believe in the rule 1 is none and 2 is one. I just can't find some of my older firearms to get seconds, or if I do the cost is way more than I want to spend just to have a secondary firearm and parts.

1/20/2018: Weather 70 and light winds.

100 yards - dead on bulls eye entire magazine. Winchester 150 gr FMJ : Brass was unrecoverable last station on the range and the brass is somewhere in the grass. Station 20
250 yards - rear sight drum adjusted, within 20 ring shotgun pattern 3 in the 10 and only 1 bulls eye : Tulammo 150 gr : about half of the cases found other shooters not amused. Station 15
600 yards - rear sight drum adjusted, front post covering bulls eye tried freehand first 10 went to gun bag for stability missed the paper 2 times, last 10 were within the 50 ring shotgun pattern only 2 close so I count that to luck : Tulammo 150 gr : all cases recovered other shooters understandably upset. Station 12

I like this rifle, it isn't what I expected. The recoil wasn't bad and since they require a 3 second wait between shots, I took my time.
I got frustrated on the long range shots because I couldn't tell where the shots were hitting with my binoculars. I need a spotting scope or to purchase the clamp on scope rails to have a better feel for this rifle. I think its well worth the price. Cleanup was done at the range in no time and I am impressed with the modularity. I will keep and eye out for a wide hand guard and a bipod if it will help steady the rifle. I can tell you that after 20 rounds the hand guard was warm so I need to do something about that.

Did some pistol / shotgun shooting at station 3 just for fun.
