  • whats going on with PTR?

I was making my mind up to get one and went to the website and all of the stuff that was there is gone. The company got my respect by leaving a state once they ruled against firearms owners. Some of their marketing material had Trump endorsing them and that's keen.

So I went to their website and its coming soon?

I am thinking about getting the classic without rails this way I can use the standard claw mounts. I'll get Nikon or Leupold fixed power 4x or 6x T reticle.

They're still open for business. They are just reworking the web site. I would contact your local dealer and find out what is available from his distributors.

PTR has released a few new models like the MSG-90, but it's not quite like the original (or even their prior MSG90 release) and I don't like the hand guard on that rendition. I also don't know if it uses the PSG trunion or has the heavy barrel.

Hard to find out with no web site to refer to.

Having the original mount adds to the authenticity, but that is one thing I compromised on when I bought mine. I've had the HK91 with that claw mount, and while it's a very secure system and has a repeatable zero, it is much too high to use without a cheek piece on the stock.

HK actually had this configuration as a designated marksman's rifle called the G3SG/1 that had an adjustable cheek rest, and additional pad to lengthen the pull slightly, and a heavy barrel.

If you want the military issue version, that one is Parked, the rest are all Parked and painted. I don't really care for paint on a military field rifle.

Gun Broker is also a good source for finding these cheap. A GI version shouldn't cost more than around $900, and even cheaper new ones can be found with some searching and checking ads daily.

Thank you, I was excited about the platform but got worried when their website went missing. I did find a distributor called "Atlantic Firearms" they have a large selection but can't seem to find any first person reviews of the company. If anybody has pro/con on doing business with them let me know.

Buds, and Gunbroker also have some of the PRT series; however, the prices are all over the place. I want to start with the basics and see if the weapon will be a good tool so I can keep the premium 308 in reserve. I have been told days after the holidays are the best to find deals because some people overextend and have to sell for paying bills also companies want to end the year on a positive income and reduce inventory so probably on Monday I will have made a decision.

I've never done business with Atlantic, but all I hear about them is good. Excellent CS.

My problem with them is never having anything I want in stock when I have money. Even when I don't have money they don't have what I want in stock.

If you see something you want and it's in stock, you best buy it right then and there because the next day it probably won't be there.

Atlantic has a good rep, although somewhat pricey at times.

They did F' up an order of mine recently, but, in fairness, it was only a stock set, and was ordered in the middle of the night. (ie: probably lost in the shuffle)

When I brought it to thier attention, they shipped ASAP and apologised profusely.

Been following them for many years, like Herr Walther, never had a big order - but never heard a negative.

I'd gladly do business with them again. Only reason I haven't, I've always found a slightly better deal in the past.

But they have a top notch selection. At fair prices, I just enjoy the hunt for a super good deal.

Order processed, I got the last one from "Bud". Atlantic was sold out. I paid $799 for the : PTR 91 CLASSIC BLK 308WIN 18" 20RD Model: PTR108 Condition: Factory New Bud's Item Number: 411557767 UPC: 897903002077 MFG: PTR 91 Inc.

It will take 10 days to ship to my FFL, I'm hoping its a good rifle. If it works as the reviews claim then I'm happy. I have already seen how to replace the buffer, there is info on trigger group upgrades and the like. We have a small show here in January that I will check for mags and stocks.

I will give an honest review and have learned so much about where to oil and how to maintain.

I was tempted at Atlantic for a DSA series but none of the parts will work with what I have except mags. At half the cost I had to go with the PTR.

Send the trigger pack to William's. He's the HK trigger pack guru. Unless you want to lay out a couple of thousand for a PSG-1 pack, William's is it.

I certainly hope Bud's has your rifle in stock. They have the irritating habit of selling crap they don't actually have in stock. I wouldn't buy two ear plugs from these Scheisters, but I hope your transaction goes OK.

Atlantic never has anything popular in stock PTR-wise.

Why are you wanting to replace the buffer? If the bolt head spacing is correct the recoil impulse is very mild.

I watched a few videos on how to make the standard PTR Better. He also recommended the same man for the 12lb reduction to a better quality pull (I gather this was done because of the German standards in drop testing).

The other modifications were with the flash suppressor and the buffer it makes the felt recoil almost nothing.

Decot family shooters had the buffer stuff, I think they also talked about Williams lowering the pull to 4.5.

Re: whats going on with PTR?

When I worked for H&K and was doing Military/LEO demo's I had both a true MSG90 and a PSG1 to use. For my personal rifle I had an H&K 91 with two trigger groups. One was the one that came in it and the second was the one I sent to Williams to be changed to a single set one. It was better than the one in the MSG90 and almost as good as the factory one in the PSG1.

Buy a second trigger group and send it to Williams the day you get the gun or earlier if you can. You will NOT regret it!

Re: whats going on with PTR?

The other changes I would recommend is add a case buffer and change the rear sight to one from the H&K 21 LMG if you can find one. Adjustable with NO tools. Bipod just adds weight and unless you are setting it up to be a squad light mg, it is about worthless.

The factory scope mount is the way to go as it allows the scope to come off and on with no loss of zero. As the PTR has a scope rail, then the double clamp one should also work well.

CDNN Sports usually carries PTR, and prices are typically lower than other suppliers.

Re: whats going on with PTR?

PTRs latest rifles are great, they don't have the old "match" barrel issues where they are finicky for ammo. I broke my PTR 91 in as per instructions with 200 rounds and appropriate cleanings with a variety of ammo (my reloads, steel cased and factory brass) with zero issues!

It's a steal with the integrated picatinny rail. And the paddle magazine release which is much easier to change mags.

Don't forget a brass deflector and bipod from RTG or HK Parts.

Do you have a PTR with the rail that the port buffer fit on?

I didn't think there was room because of the rail being in the way.

Looks like no room for the port buffer, don't know what I was thinking.

But I recommend the US made handguard, looks like they have the bipod attachment. You can buy a bipod and slip it on.

I'm going to a show in town after lunch and will look out for extras. I still don't have a tracking number from Buds but they did send me via E-mail a free "App" that I can install on my phone. Yes the "App" is a firearms inventory program so I can keep a log of firearms that I own. UMmmm No thanks Buds'
