  • NEW! PTR91 finally

I think I've come home. Finally.

Long story short, I've never been in love with the .223/5.56mm cartridge nor the AR rifle. I know, blasphemy you say! Sorry, it just isn't for me. I've always liked the 7,62x51/.308 cartridge and those furin' rifles that use them.

I had an HK91 20 years ago that I foolishly sold because of a divorce and never had money for another. Enter the StG.58. Bought as a matching, like new, Mannlicher-Steyr parts kit that I built on an Imbel receiver. Wonderful rifle I loved to death, but just wasn't scratching my German rifle itch. Sold it off because I needed some extra cash and tried another AR last October. Unhappy from day one. :hand1:

I picked up my new PTR GI model today on a trade for my PSA M4gery I got back in October of last year.

I love it. I haven't been this excited about a rifle since I built my StG.58 back in '02. It's everything I remember about the HK91 except the (then) $2500 price tag. Built on HK tooling and jigs using their blueprints and drawings it's every bit an HK except that it's built here. It even has HK parts in it.

The EO Tech 512 holographic sight is on its way for the rail and the HK collapsible stock from HKParts.com is on its way too. I also ordered four surplus steel mags from a seller on GB that will be arriving next week. 500 rounds of PP Serbian ammo was on the doorstep this afternoon too.

Having a very good day today.

Thanks! I really liked the StG.58 and it was very accurate, but it just wasn't the same. If you know what I mean. It just didn't do it for me totaly like this G3 clone does.

It doesn't even matter that it's not entirely Made in Germany. It's as close as anyone is ever going to get for this rifle and I'm having a very good day today!

BTW, those picts were right out of the box and I hadn't even stripped it to clean up the excess shipping lube. It looks much better now sitting here in my lap, and in another week it's really going to be a looker with the collabsible stock and the EO Tech sight!

I owned an original HK and a Greek clone, if this rifle is even close to either of those, you'll love it.

This rifle is an exact copy. I too had an HK91 20+ years ago. The welds are perfect, the finishing is outstanding, and everything is as it should be on an HK rifle.

Still have my HK91. Think I will hang on to it.
Congrats on getting that fine piece.

PTR's are currently running under $1K iirc?

              Around 9'ish?

              Similar but not same

That one has the Navy lower and black furniture, but other than that, the same rifle.

Mine is going to be essentially the paratrooper or armor model when the new stock arrives.

                  I prefer the green furniture.

                  you're changing yours?

Could you please elaborate on Navy lower / Armor lower?

I always thought 'para' was barrel length\set up

                  Not the receiver.

I have had a Greek G3 marked rifle for years and this thing is one accurate rifle! Love those HK style 308 guns and always will I think.

Good buy on that one. I would love to have a PTR especially a heavy barrel one!

The use of the collapsible stock on the G3 was originally for armor units and not paratroops as is commonly thought. It was used on 18" rifles. I don't think a 16" was available until contract rifles and clones started being produced, but don't quote me on that last statement.

No such thing as an 'armor lower' to my knowledge.

The Navy lower is polymer and comes in several different configurations. 2, 3, and 4 position. All have to be modified just as the metal lower does for use with a semi-auto rifle.

I'm keeping my furniture green and I found and bought a new original HK green wide hand guard with the bi-pod mount from GB this morning.

                          Re: NEW! PTR91 finally

I like the Magpul solution for the front mount. I would have to install it from scratch on the right side though for a lefty like me.

The real solution though is to use the aftermarket retaining pin/sling mounts used in place of the hand guard retaining pin and the fixed or collapsible stock retaining pin for the rear.

They are about $20 each. Problem solved with no drilling or relocation. The pins can be inserted from either direction for left or right handed sling mounting.

Those are good guns. I like the metal handguard PTR makes. It's quite slick and wide enough to avoid heat.

I have the original wide plastic handguard coming with the internal heat shield and bi-pod mount and lock intact.

Those things are getting beyond scarce.

Took some better photos yesterday under natural lighting outside:
