I just won a raffle for a Rem 700 SPS Tactical in .308. Do not have it yet. Anyone own one of these animals? Opinions? I am thinking it should be pretty good for a $20 gun.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
Next question: I picked up the gun while back home in TN/KY but had no time to shoot it so she is in the safe in MO. I was looking into stocks and options to make it more tacticool and ran across a MagPul magazine adapter at Midway Arms. Looks to me like it will work with the stock stock (see what I did there?) but the specs do not come out and say so. They do say it works with the $6.3 million MagPul stock but that stock also works with the stock trigger guard and internal magazine as supplied. Based on my ASSumptions, I think this will work but I am in HI, gun in MO (no it will never come here, too much of a PITA and I cannot gun hunt on Oahu anyway) so I am looking for some input from the crowd.:kneel:There is no I' n team!

No, this will not work as a drop in. The stock must be modified to accommodate the new magwell insert or use the aftermarket stockThere is no I' n team!

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
My thoughts:
Had one of them, hated every pound! I will never own another Remington firearm and will pass on their ammo. They are not what they used to be and their product shows it.
I suspect their military grade hardware is OK but the cost is too high. I can purchase two Savages for one of these boat anchors $.
My experience was the thing is too heavy, the action was stiff, internal mag collected more dirt than a Dyson. I had the .223 so it wasn't a "Sniper Rifle" and the accuracy was lousy!
I put the best rings and optics on the rifle thinking it would make it a better shooter but was disappointed to say the least.
Never had the safety issue that was discovered after years of denial. The fact that Remington did nothing to resolve a known problem is one reason they have gone down.Call me John, just an old man with opinions.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
I'm exploring my options for a long range precision rifle. I'm currently investigating the Steyr Mannlicher SSG.69. Still in use by the Austrian Army for their sniper teams, it is supposed to be sub-MOA out of the box.
I'm also looking at the JP Sauer und Sohn 100 and 200 series rifles. They too are sub-MOA out of the box. Not crazy about the plastic trigger guard on the Sauer though. I've heard of it being easily damaged and expensive to replace.
Then I thought of using one of my Mausers as a basis for a precision rifle, but for the amount of money spent to do this I could have bought one of the above.
Tikka and Sako are also under consideration.
Remington is not an option at this time.Peace Through Strength, Victory Through Devastation...Strategic Air Command

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
You will not go wrong with the Steyr Mannlicher SSG.69
I do not like the idea of expensive replacement parts and high $ plastic rotary magazines. Do not go with the blank barrel always have iron sites. The weird rings are nice because they go to zero.Call me John, just an old man with opinions.
