    AR upper to flattop conv.

    i have the std. AR a2 upper w/carry handle, i want to machine the handle off, mill the base to piccanty rail specs but leave the a2 sight assy's (frt.+rear). anyone here done this before or had it done? LoneGunman, you out there?

    Kind of the long way to get at it, don't you think?

    Seems to me you could sell your stripped upper, buy a flat top and rear sight module and be ahead of the game cost wise. This route would probably cost you about $100. I guarantee finding someone to do what you want and refinish it will take more money than that plus who knows how much time.

    Of course if this is a project to keep you off the street, have at it!

      i guess i was confused, i figured w/my hesse (read: no resale) upper, a new rear sight assy and new upper would be to much money. i thought i could get a smith to do this for around a 100$ and not have to purhase new stuff. i know about hesse's rep, i had to use their upper bexause i returned a AK i bought from them and all they would give me is credit. but it has ran w/o a hitch and i am at 900-1k rounds. i wanted to pop off the upper , goto a show and swap, but i carry this thing daily and it shows, not abused just not pristine and i didnt think i would get any money back out. how much do u think a smith will charge for this?

        Hey bro. I agree with southern raider. You can get a stripped RRA flat top upper for less than $100.

          it sounds good, but i dont have a local smith and i dont have the talent/tools to headspace the BBL or any of that stuff, am i in a lost cause here, what would u do something liek this for , lonegunman?

            I have no problem doing it for you but you can buy go and no-go gauges for under $40 and have them for life. The AR is the absolute easiest build IMHO. Read this tutorial and if you still want me to do it Ill email you a price.

              While not highly desired, I'll bet you can squueze a few bucks out of a Hesse upper. I would also think about investing in the tools to rebarrel. You can probably sell those as well when you are done.

              Tools needed:
              <UL TYPE=SQUARE>
              <LI>Bench mounted vise
              <LI>GI barrel wrench ($10)
              <LI>Torque wrench ($25 from swap meet)
              <LI>Action block ($50) Some people use barrel blocks, but I have little success with that.
              <LI>Armorer's manual. (Free to download)[/list]

              The barrel comes pre-headspaced and I don't worry about it, but most people like to check and gauges are extra.

                lonegunman, the slide is holding up wonderful, the humidity is killing these guys weapons down here, mine is rust free and still cherry. some slight,very slight, wear from the SSIII holster but less than expected. i am very pleased and would love to do my mags and maybe a set of peerless cuffs. the only thing i have done is swab the bbl. can u e-mail me w/a quote for this smith job on the AR? golddot@optic-net.com. if anyone had any questions about your work, i'll be glad to vouch for the quality and value.

                  Golddot, I just swapped my A2 upper for a flattop and assembled a 20" barrel on the flattop upper. It went like this.

                  $259 shipped for a complete 16" barreled flattop, minus bolt group. (or $95 for a RRA flattop)

                  $37 for action blocks.

                  $19 for a Sears 4" vise.

                  $30 for a DPMS barrel wrench

                  (already had a torque wrench)
                  sears has cheapies for about 30-40.
                  You don't need the best since the torque range is 31-81 lbs to align gas tube slots)

                  So around $181 to do it. Now, I could sell the tools off and recoup $60, so would have $121 in it and a vise left over.

                  If you buy and upper and have it assembled, you'll have at least that in it, without a nice vise left over, or the ability to replace you barrel later or...

                  Its really simple too. Plus the complete uppr from RRA is already headspaced, so as long as your barrel is o.k., you should have an issue. You don't really set headspace on AR's when installing. It is cut into the barrel.
