What do some of you use for home defense or patrol if you are in law enforcement?

    I'm currently using Winchest Super-X 3" 15pellet 00 buck.

Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs out of a Beretta semi-auto with an aftermarket short rifled barrel. It wears an "always-turned-on" aimpoint red-dot scope (with 50,000 hours constant-on battery life, or about 5 years).

      12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch, 385 grains, 1900 fps, 3,000 ft/lbs muzzle energy!, expanding tip, 4 pre-serrated petals.

Because self defense = No foolin' around. I really like your 3-inch magnum 15 count 00 buck loads, too! That's the way I'd go if I ever choose buck shot.

At typical shotgunning distances with open bore or improved cylinder bore barrels, I see no reason to use anything too expensive. I buy my stuff a Wally World in their 15 round bulk paks, a little over six bucks for either buck or slugs. Premium loads, with proper choking, will increase lethal range of buckshot by several yards but I don't try to turn my 870 into a rifle. Mine will place those bargain priced slugs into a 10" circle at 100 yards, even with my bead sight. For my Pachmayr Vindicator pistol gripped Mossberg, I use lighter powder charged "Tactical" loads in 00, simply to cut down on recoil just a bit.

I have nothing to do with law enforcement, but for what its worth, I use 00 Buck, and Brenneke slugs in my Mossberg and my Remington 870

Just a regular guy. To me defense and 12ga = Non-lethal so 'yes' a person should have OC, Bean-Bag and rubber bullet rounds for defense. (Lets say a drunk is mouthing off and making threats, JUST SHOOT HIM! It gets the police there quick and nobody died, just make sure you are in the right)

Given there are so many choices for a shot gunner the sky is the limit, there are few firearms that have such an ammo selection.

There are only a few "Specialty" rounds that I don't see being of any use. Bird-bombs, Screamers for wildlife, Flame-thrower, tacks, bolo and door busters have no place in my ammo selections.

I can understand Smoke and flare rounds for location in the event you were stuck in no-mans land and needed to get attention. Flechette rounds will get the point across, but even a vest has problems stopping smaller pelllets from a regular shotshell.

To address your question 7.5 bird shot is the best for self protection when somebody may be trying to get at you inside your home.

I see we'll be taking up a bail collection for you.

LoneGunman you do know I was talking about non lethal LOL.

A snout full of pepper spray works on drunks; just ask my wife, not me of course she carries some and used it once on a drunk jerk.

Ifn it were me he would get the rubber balls or the beanbag. Cops in town have used them many times and bet if there was a question about discharging a firearm within city limits there wouldn't be any problem. I figure the moment he is on my land and a threat he's just lucky that I think non-lethal is an option, because others might not.

I have some concerns about over penetration so the first two rounds are 2-3/4 #6 birdshot. After that it 3" double ought baby.

A firearm used against an unarmed person, whether used with non-lethals or not will get you in more trouble than you'd wish on your worse enemy. World of difference between spraying someone with tear gas and shooting them. (in some locales, tear gas use is illegal as well)

#4 Buckshot for the "inside" gun. Outside use varies from OO buck to slugs according to perceived threat level.
