  • Uh-OH! Gonna have to rethink the usefullness of a pump shotgun.

After our monthly pistol shoot, we set up a shotgun course that included as the last stage, shooting from low cover, lying down. The pump shooters had a severe disadvantage trying to stay low and work the shotgun. They managed but their times were super slow compared to the semi auto shooters. I've always used a slide action from a standing position, where they can hold their own with the auto shuckers so I had never realized this situation. I also noticed a problem for some trying to work the action while shooting on the run, and some had problems short stroking under pressure.
"some people never let their given word interfere if something they want comes along"
The real problem with the world are laws preventing culling.

I think with any type of shotgun there are going to be trade offs...If you think you'll realistically need to shoot lying down or really low, I can see where a pump would be a problem. I guess for the me the versatility of a pump makes it a better choice than an auto. I like the fact that I can used anything from a mini shell to a super mag, and any combination of in between, and not have to worry about whether it will feed or not. For that matter, there is a lot to be said for an old coach gun.

Staying low/prone and working the action is tuff. Try holding the forearm steady and working the shotgun back and forth. Seems to work for me.

learn how to roll then rack. shoot, roll back some what, so your still pointed at your target area. this affords you a little more cover then back on target.

                slink (aka GunKid) ...

With some practice, rolling side to side in the prone works very well. Using this method for a couple years I didn’t like my speed/times very much, so I taught myself to shoot ambidextrous with a pump shotgun. Now I'm able to keep up with semis. Surprisingly it wasn’t too hard to teach myself to do this as tight accurate shots weren’t necessary. (not very good with a carbine though)

For those short stroking on the run, keep the action steady and “pump” the shotgun while running, less chance for short strokes.

I just hate all the dust that kicks up when going prone, can't get back on target as quickly.
