  • Mossberg 9200

Just picked up a Mossberg 9200 in a trade. Interesting gun. Even though it has a 24" barrel, the gun itself is only a little longer than my Beretta 1201 because the action and stock on the Mossberg is a lot shorter. I remember reading some good reviews about the 9200 jungle gun, but my experience is that 18" barrels are too short to be useful. The 24" tube on this does not feel overly long, but a 4 shot magazine seems to be a party pooper.

Question, who makes the extended magazines for the semi-auto Mossbergs?

I believe choate makes an mag tube extension. If you have capabilities to silver solder, I have one you can get real cheap. I had bought it to put on my Jungle Gun, but the distance from the end of the mag tube to the tube in the extension was about 1/2" and was snagging the mag spring. I used a torch to soften the solder and pulled it apart. I then planned to screw on the threaded union and push the ext. tube down until it hit the mag tube and mark it and resolder but never got around to it. I think it was a 7 shot ext. or maybe an 8. Anyway it is about 6" long when assembled. All it needs is to have the above work done and refinished. I'd sell it to you for $6 to cover shipping. If you're interested e-mail me and I can tell you more.

If you aren't interested I can tell you that the choate one is made for the 5500/9200 and not the 9200A1. The A1 (Jungle Gun) has some different gas parts including a spacer for the forearm that makes it a little longer than on the 9200 and this keeps the extension from screwing on as far.

My 920A1 was a good gun as a 5 shot, but it wouldn't feed right with the ext. due to the above issue. It was nowhere as fst to shoot as a Benelli though. I took it to the range with some slugs and my 590 and recoil was near the same. I guess because the 9200 was a bit lighter. A local gun shop has a "preban" 9200A1 with a right side folding Choate stock marked Mossberg. The LE version was supposed to have a 14" barrel, so I would guess the gas system is tune dto work that short. I had a Mossy LE catalog and they showed some short ones. They were tiny. It would be cool to have that "preban" sawed off to 14" with the sidefolder for a truck gun. I say "" about preban cause I thought the 9200A1 came out after 94. I could be wrong though.

RT: I love my 9200 0 I've got the Viking model with the light green composite cammo stock. I can live with the 4 shot magazine, I'd like to be able to shorten the barrel to about 20 inches if possible.

Does Mossberg make a 20 in barrel for the 9200 yet, or can I cut down another long barrel safely without affecting the gas port?

Strange I have the 9200a1 Jungle Gun and a 2 shot choate extention on it. Un;less you request the Jungle gun follower you get the regular 9200 follower and that can cause problems. I've had trouble only eith some Winchester Tactical #00 buck loads .Everything else the gun loves.
Don't know if you recognize the name or Even care but Evan Marshall and the guys at his stopping power forums love the Jungle Gun.

well, mine had another problem with ther rear of the bolt rubbing the receiver just enough to cause a hesitation in it's recharging of the next round. That may have only aggrevated the prob with the extension. I bought two different extensions and they both had the problem. I polished the spot where the wear was taking place but to no avail.
