Yesterday at a local gunshop they had what looked like an M4 for $1,600.00 However, after comparing it to pics at Benelli USA, the one at the shop now looks like a clone of some sort. It was definitely a Benelli -- I own an M3 but this one looked like an M1 -- but I didn't get any info off the tag or the weapon, nor did I see if the stock collapsed or not, so I don't know what they're calling it (I only window-shop at this place because their staff is difficult to talk too.....to many so-called "experts" working there, y'know). Did Benelli make a clone for civilians yet?
The differences in the one at the shop and the one on the Benelli page are:
1) the "shaft" that the collapsible stock is mounted on at the Benelli page has grooves for the stock to adjust, but on the weapon at the shop the shaft had no grooves -- it was smooth.
2) the weapon at the shop had three or so finishes on different parts of the weapon; the picatinny looked like aluminum and had an epoxy finish, the receiver had the normal Benelli coating, the barrel was the normal Benelli parkerizing, and there was this weird thing mounted on the mag extension (more on that below) that was parkerized darker than the barrel.
3) as I mentioned above, the extension on the weapon at the shop had some sort of weird thing on it....it went between the handguards and the front barrel ring mount, and it had 5 or six deep co-centric grooves in the front-middle portion. I couldn't figure out what the heck it was, except for maybe it was some sort of heat radiator (it had that appearance) -- but it doesn't make sense why it was on the extension. It didn't look like any sort of equipment mount or anything.
4) the bolt handle on the weapon at the shop was different than any Benelli I've ever seen -- parkerized, round, and had deep co-centric grooves cut in it -- the grooves made the handle skinnier in the middle of it. The bolt handle on the weapon at the Benelli site looks like their standard round handle.
5) the "hump" below the receiver on the M4 at the Benelli site (what is that hump there for, anyways? a reload-assist device? for the gas-action? receiver reinforcement?) was missing on the one at the shop, which makes me suspect that it's really an M1 gussied-up.
Any thoughts? If so, thanks in advance! I'm going back to the shop tomorrow to take a better look -- will report back if there's any interest.
