I never heard of that. I have .38 special and have heard of .38 S&W. They aren't interchangeable. What is .38 S&W special?

The actual correct name of .38 Special. Just like .44 Magnum is actually .44 Remington Magnum and .357 Magnum is .357 S&W Magnum.

The .357 and .38 were invented by Smith & Wesson.

        A 44mag, .357mag / .38 spl ?? what? In a SHTF sort of situation.

I am sort of thinking .357mag, but I am not sure. 44mag has quite a whallop too!

        Opinions, thoughts??

        Thanks

Pistol cal's.......always go to the .44 magnum, you can always down load to .44 special. The bullet can be anywhere from 180 to 320gr, lead, JHP, JSP, or FMJ......Good pistol grade LA round for just about anything.

Why not an M4, HiPoint 9mm, or sks? Are autorifles forbidden in your area? Why take twice as long for repeat shots? Why have that awkward, slow, fragile tubular magazine? Ever try reloading one while in the dark, in the rain, mud, snow, in prone? With gloves or with cold numbed hands? It sucks, dude, believe it. Why give up the GI parts, look, mags, rds? Why give up half of your potential range? why not have the ability to pierce soft body armor? Why give up the dark, rust resistant finish of military type arms? Why give up the drop in trigger pulls, the drop in luminout sight inserts, laser target designators, flashhider, threaded muzzle, sightline over the "blob" of the sound suppressor, ccw (of the taken down M4) etc? Why postulate a fight, then handicap yourself with less than optimial gear? shtf is going to be mob action, most places, much of the time, for a year or so. Don't kid yourself about that. There will be very little, if any game left after a month or so. The cats, dog packs and people will have eaten all the animals.

Historically, Gun grabbers start with detachable mag autoloaders and cowboy guns are WAY down on their list of scary guns.

Go watch a high ranked cowboy shooter who REALLY knows how to run a lever action.

In a zombie melee, the cowboy is going to fare MUCH better than the former AR owner who is now reduced to a break action single shot!

A lever action should be a part of everyone's arsenal!

              Re: Lever Rifle pistol calibers??

              Ok....

I owned a .44 mag Rossi. I liked it a lot. . . very smooth to operate. While I like a .357 revolver better than a .44... if I have a big rifle I'd prefer a big bullet. To me the .44 mag is a better option for a rifle. If you are going to tote something like that around, you might as well make each shot worth as much as you can. I mean hey there is always the chance of running into a bear right??? (of course I had that gun in Alaska where you would not want to shoot a bear with a .357). Just buy a .44 mag revolver to go with it. The Ruger Alaskan is a nice option. And hey you will probably buy both a .357 and .44 anyway right????

That said... I do not understand the use of one of these rifles for SHTF, except as just an extra rifle for the house.

You want a 50 state legal SHTF gun that is much better than a lever gun... and I mean much better....... buy a pump action shotgun. The pump action shotgun is much more versatile, reloads faster, and is even more useful for hunting. Load it with bird shot and you can hunt birds (try that with a .44). Or you can load it with buck shot or .72 caliber slugs for hunting larger game. For self defense, it is more useful for many reasons. Follow up shots come much faster. Racking a slide is faster than cocking a lever. It is less likely to over-penetrate (with the right ammo). It shoots a bigger round. It is more intimidating. It is just over all more bad ***. You can talk all you want about .357 vs .44 mag for human defense, but no one is going to take a conversation about .357 versus 12 gauge seriously.

And you can do a lot with a shotgun. You can put a light on it (and laser too if you are into that kind of thing). You can put a pistol grip on it. You can get a folding stock for it and all sorts of other options. Overall the shotgun is something you really should have. A lever action rifle is a nice toy and makes a good deer rifle, but for SHTF stick to the basics. Get a semi-automatic rifle, get a semi-automatic handgun and get a shotgun. Once you have the holy trilogy in place then you can buy other stuff. But remember the other stuff is just taking away from your core. You are not going to be "better off" with a lever gun in addition to an AR-15. You will be better off with more ammo and mags and spare parts. A shotgun though... well a shotgun is just too damn useful not to have and in CQB can hold its own with anything.

Yeah I live in Central America. Assault rifles are illegal there (both semis and real ones). Hence no one has one right? I mean you won't find any illegal assault rifles in Latin America... That's true isn't it? I mean its not like you could just easily buy one right? Its not like half the finca owners have a small illegal arsenal with everything from ARs to WWII era german machine guns is it?

Anyway people can hand in whatever they want. I lost my guns years ago so I don't have to worry about it. The other guy can use his break open gun. I have to use my axe. Cause I don't have guns... like all the other people in Central America, I am disarmed.
