    Re: 870 or 590??

I have owned both. When I sold the collection way down I kept the 590 because it was left to me by a gear friend that passed away. I think the 870 was the better gun and wish I would have kept it.

      870

I've always felt that the Mossberg had better ergonomics, what with the tang-mounted safety especially, but I do know that Mossberg makes the trigger housing out of some sort of plastic, and the slide stops against it. Eventually the trigger housing wears out. A friend of mine has a Mossberg 500 and when this happened to his he tried to order a replacement trigger housing, and they were sold out and backordered for months.

I've owned them both. The Mossbergs tend to arrive cheap and leave fast but always with a profit margin. The Remingtons stay longer, last longer, shoot better, bring more $$. Oh I love a good 870.

Mossberg has better ergonomics, inferior build quality. Remingtons can be tuned up to work at higher levels of performance, but ergonomics, especially under stress, can still be an issue.

As for how long the gun will last, not even close, Remington is clearly superior in that department.

Just if you really get into shotgun shooting, you will end up not liking either one a whole lot compared to what else is out there. Benelli, Fabarm, Ithaca, lots of good other stuff out there.

Remington has used plastic for the 870 trigger assembly for quite a few years now, so that claim is somewhat of a wash.
And the slide never comes into contact with the trigger assembly on the 500, it slides above it, only contacting the hammer to cock it.
The polymer in the Mossberg 500 trigger assembly is every bit as durable as that used in Glock and other polymer pistols.
The trigger housing is extremely durable and has proven itself since the early 60's, and that may be part of the reason Remington eventually went to it. .
Metal trigger assemblies are available for the M500 by the way (I have a couple of them), they're standard on the "real" 590.
But I do have three M500's with the polymer trigger assemblies, and have never had any problems.
The age old 870 vs 500 debate has been going for as long as the two brands have been made, and so far there is no clear winner.
The 870 is approx. 0.0% more reliable or durable than the M500....but for some strange reason, it is way more popular. .
But, just in case one can't tell, I am rather fond of the Mossberg 500. .
