I have had a couple 870's and never had a prob with them. However, I like the extra capacity of the Mossberg, along with the ease of loading. That is the one complaint about my 1187, I hate the loading guide, or whatever its called. I like how the Mossberg is opened up, it helps a lot when its cold outside and your fingers are aching from getting smashed from the stupid shell guide. With the Mossberg there is nothing in the way of fast reloads.
I would go for both if Australia's gun laws were different. However, I would go for the Remington 870 on the grounds that I've handled my fair share of Remington 870s at gun shows and Army Open Days so I've got some experience with the 870.
Grew up with the 870 and love them. For off the shelf ready to go combat pump gun I would go with the 590 now. Own 870 and 570 both. The 870 is a stay at home gun and the 590 gets to go places.
I also own a Mossy......but it strikes me more as being the "Cobray" of shotguns......it works....but iffn' ya don't oil it every week......it turns into a rust magnet.....plus everything just exudes......"cheap"..........
Remmy's are heavier, but I prefer the quality, over the weight. As far as capacity goes, I have the "tube extenders" on my Remmy's........
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgement was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands: and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. Rust?
Oh I suppose the barrel or the mag might be prone to rust like any steel but the Mossy uses an aluminum reciever and there's no way that's ever gonna rust.
Besides that what kinda wannabe doesn't keep his guns well oiled????
I have an 870 and a 590. Prefer the 590. The 590 ejects spent shells real positively. I believe the 590 has double ejectors. Even if you don't rack the slide properly, it still throws spent shells clear. The 870 does not do that. Unless you rack the slide smoothly and forcefully shells tend to hang up. On my 870, after ten years, shells tend to hang up and I have to turn the shot gun on it's right side and shake the spent case out of the ejection port. I would recommend the 590 over the 500, due to the 590's heavier receiver and thicker barrel. 590A1 is the choice of the USMC and the only scattergun to pass rigorous military testing.
870's are higher quality in terms of machining finish, etc.
Unless you are left handed and need the ambi-safety, I would definitely go with the Remington.
Have to agree with this assessment entirely. The Remington is a higher quality gun but the 590 has some ergonomic advantages. The upgrade from the 500 to the 590 pretty much solved every other advantage the 870 had, except the overall longevity and build quality which you will never functionally notice the difference on unless you burn a whole lot of rounds through the shotgun year after year.
Capacity is a non-issue since you can easily install magazine extensions on the 870. Many now come with it already installed.
At one time when I was maintaining a serious buiness arsenal, I had two or three 500 series guns, I think two 590s and an 8 shot 500. I had one Remington for training purposes then it went away. I eventually replaced all but one 500 and never replaced the 870 when it was stolen, then got three Benellis which were stolen by the government. The lawyer told me it was the federal policy to melt down confiscated guns, but then again, I strongly suspect those three tricked out Benelli Super-90s ended up in some pigs gun locker somewhere.
If you just need a shotgun for the arsenal, loadout, or whatever you want to call it, then either the 870 or 590 will do. If you really need performance and comfort and want to develop some capability, the guns are too slow on the repeat fire to lay out accurate rapid fire lead without a lot of modification that puts them into the dollar range of a decent used Benelli anyway. Real world pros I went up against at three gun matches who had their game on well with the pistols and carbines did well on them usually (bot not always) better than me, especially with pistols, but then I got in the winners circle by sneaking those extra points in with a good run on the Benelli as the other guys just tossed the points away using their Mossbergs and Remingtons.
