  • Best choke to use with slugs?

First off, I'm not really a shotgun person. I own one--- an OLD Remington 11-48 that I rarely ever shoot. Anyway . . .

I once read or heard that for accuracy a full choke is best for slugs? True, not true, in-between, whatever, who cares?

Also, what would be the best for buckshot? CQB AND distance.

    Thanks!

Good question. Honestly don't know but would think you'd get less deforming of the slug using modified or improved cylinder. I have a double barrel that has both(modified barrel, improved cylinder barrel) and they shoot good and kill deer. lol

As for accuracy between chokes would be interesting to find out. I have a Winchester 1400 and remington 1100 both with removable chokes.

Buckshot for bigger spread my Mossberg 500 persuader works good. It's cylinder bore-no choke. lol All the other shotguns seem to pattern ok with chokes(tube or built in like my double barrel).

The traditional answer is that slugs and buckshot loads can be fired in all constrictions up to and including Full choke with complete safety. However, much testing has been done (one of the best published treatise is "Mossberg Guide To Modern Slug Shooting ... And More" by R.W. "Bob" Zwirz). This author says that each gun is different and so a number of loads need to be tried. Usually though, Cylinder and IC (and maybe Mod) will work better with a particular load.

I have come up with a proprietary ported (patent pending) choke and am testing them on everything from bird shot loads to buckshot and slugs. If you are interested, I will keep you up to date with how the testing goes.

I saw a post you had made here on your ported chokes when I did a search prior to posting my questions. Looks like a nice system.

I posted my question because I was curiuos as to what is best. I'm considering configuring my 11-48 into a defensive shotgun--- maybe cut the barrel to 18" (currently 28" modified--- quite unhandy for use indoors) and either attach a removeable choke (found a ported Weaver in my junk pile) or leave it with no choke. Possibly configure a longer mag tube to add a couple of rounds (currently holds four including the one in the chamber). I may not do anything to it at all, just exploring the possibilities. I'm doing this on the cheap (unemployed) so I'm using what I've got!

        Thanks for the info!

Sounds like a good plan, ColBG! Sorry that you are unemployed. On the choke, you could get someone in your area to cut Rem threads for you so that you can use different chokes or even weld, grind and smooth a choke to the muzzle. Choate and others make some relatively low cost mag extensions for extra shells.

Resist the American drive to accessorize. Cut it and shoot it.
