Because it's the correct ammunition to burn in my Garands...the pressure curve is just what the doctor ordered and I don't need to install a poppet valve gas plug to run the wrong powder.

Simply run the right powder. Every reloading manual currently being produced has correct loads for the M-1 Garand, Springfield M-1A, AR-15, and several other military semi auto firearms. This isn't rocket science. Basically if you stay away from slow burning powders in the M-1, you'll be fine. Besides, 2 guys at my local club have had to replace bent op rods from shooting the CMP Greek stuff. It's loaded very hot! I myself have experienced hard bolt lift when shooting it in both my Weatherby, as well as my Browning A-Bolt.

I get 'free' clips, cans, bandoleers and wood crates with every shopping spree. And spending a few minutes talking to Tim, PeeWee, George and the gang at the CMP for advice and scuttlebutt is always a pleasure.

Hey, I like to B.S. about guns as much as the next guy, I just won't pay to do it. And at $11.32 a box for 43+ year old ammo, trust me when I tell you the stuff is anything but "free". Besides, most places that sell surplus ammo like J&G Sales will give you the crates by simply asking for them. It's easier than them having to pay to have them hauled away.

My 1903's and model 1917 shoot like Alvin York was pulling the trigger with USGI ammunition running thru them.

And you'll find they'll shoot even better with properly loaded handloads that are custom tailored to your individual rifle. I've never seen a rifle that didn't shoot better with handloads than with mass produced ammunition. Milsurp or otherwise.

Buying the CMP products SUPPORTS shooting sports and pays for training junior shooters at clubs and organizations like the 4H across the land! It doesn't just enrich the profits of a Brazilian outfit such as Magtech.

Only to a point. The stuff the CMP is selling was made in Greece. They didn't make it for free and give it to us. The CMP is a business, no different than any other. I know the price of ammunition has gone up, but not over 110% for 4 decade old milsurp. You can buy 80's manufactured .308 for half of what the CMP is now charging for their Greek milsurp. I've bought it and shot it through both of my Springfield M-1A's. It's plenty accurate, much cleaner, and a LOT less expensive. And no bent op rods either.

Look, I'm not knocking the CMP. They are a PITA to buy from, and create as much, if not more red tape than most any other government affiliated organization. But they're intentions are at least good. With that said I, like most shooters, have to be concerned about MY economy first. Then I can go on to $h!t thunder and do great wonders for everyone else. Paying $11.32 a box for over 4 decade old ammo just doesn't get it done for me, or my economy.

When I bought this stuff for $5.29 a box my reasoning was simple. The price was cheap enough to give me some low cost plinking ammo for my many .30-06 rifles, and have a good supply of once fired brass afterward for handloading up some good, accurate rounds. For this purpose it has worked out well. But at it's current price there is simply better ammunition to buy. As I said in my first post, it's not a horrible price, but there is better ammo out there cheaper that was manufactured well after gas was .33 cents a gallon, and "The Monkee's" were in the prime time line up. That is something the CMP needs to start thinking about if their intended purpose is to help advance the shooting sports by making ammo cheaper and more accessible. $11.32 a box for 40 year old .30-06 just doesn't cut it. Especially in today's economy. Bill T.

The linked stuff goes thru my 1919A4 cheaper than the .308 and even the milsurp 8mm I've seen for it at local shows (I'm set up for three calibers).

And since I'm local to Camp Perry...no shipping.

Lastly, it's handed out at every J. C. Garand match and CMP match I shoot!

Maybe I'm just a dumb ol' cuss, but I'll keep buying that "ancient ammo" as long as the CMP has it for sale.

The price in just 2 years has risen from the $381.00 for 3 cases, (1,440 rounds), delivered, to $815.70 for the same amount of the exact same ammunition. That comes to $11.32 per box of 20. A increase of over 110%! $11.32 - $5.29 = $6.03.

$11.32 a box for 43+ year old surplus ammunition is simply not worth it. It's not a horrible price, but for a few bucks more you can find new production stuff. Here are some examples:



Federal .300 Win. Mag. $16.87 A Box



Mag Tech .308 Winchester $23.95 A Box, (50 ROUNDS = $9.58 per 20)



S&B 7.62 X 39 MM $5.29 Per Box

All of this ammunition is new production, boxer primed, brass cased, and reloadable. Plus, all of it is lead core, not steel. Many ranges do not allow steel core ammunition any longer especially in the Summer because of fire danger, not to mention it tears up their steel reactive targets.

All of the ammo I have pictured falls into a price point at or lower than what the CMP is now charging for 4 decade old surplus ammo. The stuff was a reasonable purchase at $5.29 a box simply because that is about all it is worth, considering it's age and condition. But at what they are charging now there is no way I'll be buying any more of it. Not for over DOUBLE! Bill T.

I was at Camp Perry a couple of years ago and watched as the CMP's towmotor loaded two SKIDS of M2 ball into the back of a brand new Dodge 1-ton duallie.

That truck's rear springs were getting a torture test on the way home!

I purchased these 3 cases totalling 1,440 rounds a couple of years ago for $381.00 delivered to my front door Fed Ex Ground. That comes to $5.29 per box of 20. That was a good price. "Was" being the key word in that sentence. They have since raised the price substantially, making it less of a deal. It was less of a hassle red tape wise buying ammunition from them than it is to try and buy a firearm, but with the price increases, it is becoming less of a deal. Plus, even they have no idea what the price will be on the up and coming batch, if and when they receive it. So I wouldn't get too excited just yet. Bill T.

How many more years, how many more rounds until there is no more? Good advice buying this time as it might be the last? I bought two cases of the Greek in clips and I don't even own a Garand. YET. I think another couple cases might need to be headed this way at that.
