  • testing the spirit, 1 John 4:1-3

Ever wonder if the inspiration and guidance you feel is coming from God or elsewhere? Here's something that might help. This is from the New American Bible. I prefer the NIV, but the NAB is good too....
    1 John 4:1-3

1 Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 This is how you can know the Spirit of God: every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh belongs to God,
3 and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus, does not belong to God. This is the spirit of the antichrist that, as you heard, is to come, but in fact is already in the world.

So if you feel as though the Spirit is moving you to take a particular action, while you're praying on it state "Jesus Christ is the son of God" and if you feel peace and respect when you say that, then you know it's truly the Holy Spirit speaking to you. If you feel doubts, derision, or less than complete confidence in the truth of that statement, then you can be sure that a false spirit is trying to undermine your faith.
