  • (Pistols & Revolvers) S&W Cancels

A friend told me S&W had a new CEO/President after the death of the former one and had summarily cancelled the "cave in" contract with .gov?

    Anyone else heard this?

Didn't hear that one, but I heard that the new Bush Administration has willfully "ignored" the deal struck by S&W during the Clinton admin. Either way, looks like there won't be "smart guns" for us anytime soon!

S&W is indeed no longer honoring their previous agreement with the fedgov and the fedgov is fine with that.
I think it is time to take them off our s***list.
      We made our point.

There was a long article in the American Rifleman awhile back. S&W has truly returned to the fold, both the federal deal and the Boston deal have been rescinded. Funding for R&D on "smart guns" has been redirected to other projects. Its ok to buy S&W again in my humble opinion.

Are both sides just ignoring the agreement, or has the agreement been legally recinded? The next administration could have the agreement enforced if the Bush administration is unwilling.

I really, really want to like S&W again!

S&W officially announced they are no longer honoring any of the agreements. I read the exact statement in Gun Week but don't have it here.
These guys www.smith-wessonforum.com have all the straight poop.

After some Googling, I found this:
                  http://www.impactguns.com/store/smit..._reversed.html

Seems the new CEO, Robert Scott, played it pretty smart.

                  Guess it's about time I own a S&W.

Neither the article in Gun Week nor the link on impact guns mention anything about the deal cut with the feds - just the deal with the city of Boston. This was debated heavily on TFL when news of the collapse of the Boston agreement went out, and general consensus was that no one could find anything indicating the deal with the feds was over. Lots of fancy langauge and hints from the new president, but nothing concrete. It seems like both sides are just ignoring it now, but I think it could still be a problem down the road in a less gun friendly administration - unless someone has some more recent news than what has already been presented.

S&W can't simply "cancel" the agreement unilaterally - that is, not without a heavy legal penalty.

Y'all do remember the current owner of Smith and Wesson is a tigger lock manufacturer, don't you? i.e., a company with a profit motive for trigger lock legislation. Sorry, I still don't support the enemy.

Also, as usual, the repubs are doing nothing to undo any of the damage aganist the RKBA. The S&W agreement can be enforced by the next administration.

Oh yeah, I am almost ashamed to say I have always voted for Republican candidates, and what has that gotten me???
Machine gun ban... signed by Reagan in 1986
Ban in import of military arms... executive order by G. Bush in 1989.
                      add nauseum...
As God is my witness, if G.W. signs a new "assault weapon" ban in 2004, I am through with the repubs. I'll be voting for Libertarians, hoping and working for a revolution to restore our rights, while I am young enough to participate.

If we could vote the "right people" into office, it would make all the difference in the world. Too bad the "right people" aren't running...

As someone mentioned this was huge over on tfl.

The boston agreement got creamed but I have never seen a statement from the current owners of S&W saying they dumped the agreement. And in some of the stuff from when they bought it, it said in some contract parts about the people buying *&* got all deals and contracts as set up by the company to that time.

Now I have been told many times the current owners may have dumped the agreement but can not put adds in magazines and papers saying they did so for some reason. But that is what it will take for me to buy an airweight smith I really think I would like.

I expect the next gun grabbing democrat in office to make the agreement come into play big time by enforcing it rather than letting it slide. Because until the agreement is gone this is my fear, someone in the future can use it.

Ignoring it does not make it go away.

Some research on tfl will pull a lot of posts up, search the entire board. One member over there also has some links in his sig line about it.

For now, I look at used *&* but have not found one I want to own for what they cost.

The Bush administration is the one not inforcing the "agreement". When the democrats win the presidental post (God forbid!), they will probably enforce it. S&W has no real say.
