I did judt the opposite.....I think the FALs are terribly over rated. My loaded M1A is just too accurate and too cool. My quick access is my AR10A4......very accurate.

Iron Hand-
Thank you for the pic of that very nice example of a Canadian FAL- probably my favorite-
I bought a G-series 30+ years ago- shoots great-
I removed all the original parts and changed it to a Para with 18" hammer forged barrel-
MIght put it back to original someday but if I was to get a second one it would be a C1A1 like yours-

OFG: My FAL is actually an Israeli light-barrel built on an Entreprise Arms 'Israel Match' Type I receiver. The top cover is from a C1, and the rear sight is from a C2, a 1000 meter disc. The wood furniture is actually Australian inch hand-guards, but seem to fit even with the handguard spacer against the gas regulator. Everything else is Israeli. The barrel has a 3/67 stamp, which leads me to believe that in its former life a young IDF soldier was waving it over his head after they re-took Jerusalem after almost 2000 years.

Yep, and MINE is the C1A1 the same guy built. Having shot both of them I can honestly say they are VERY good reliable rifles. Only real difference in them is IHJ got the good rear sights. LOL

Default Re: Best .308 battle Rifle Make mine an M-14.

I have extremely limited experience with the HK or the FN battle rifles, all of it left a negative image in my memory.

But I have used an M-14/M-1A extensively, both professionally and for fun. I love these rifles, I just hope I never have to carry any of them with a full combat load of ammo again.

I have owned the M14 (M1A), AR-10, FAL, H&K (semi G3), Cetme and PSL (in 7.62x54R but otherwise similar). I am a shooter so they all got tried out extensively.

I sold the FAL & H&K style rifles. I Love the M14 and the iron sights are outstanding but scope mounting is expensive and a pain. Scope mounting on the AR-10 is easy and it shoots GREAT but I don't feel it is as reliable as my M14 (pure opinion, no facts). Right now I shoot my PSL more often due to cheaper ammo prices.

In summary. If I was spending my money on a 308 today I would buy a AR-10 as first choice and M14 as second choice (I own both now).

If I just wanted a battle rifle and was not stuck on 308 I would buy a PSL (7.62x54R). The rifle is an exceptional value and surplus steel core ammo is reasonably priced. The surplus ammo is corrosive but the rifle is made to take it so cleaning is not that big a deal. If you want better accuracy my friend reloads for his and I can consistently shoot less than 2" 100yd groups (almost 1") with his ammo/rifle if I shoot slowly to avoid overheating the barrel.

YMMV-IMHO

Thx-Ace
