Default To 5.56 or not to 5.56 that is the question.

Really really hate to ask:

Alternative calibers to 5.56/.223 for the A/R platform?
Any decent deals on uppers out there?

Wouldn't waste my time with the other calibers, unless you are some kind of Bitcoin billionaire or something.

Depends, are you willing to reload &/or stock lots of ammo? Alternates to 5.56x45mm (.223 Rem) in no particular order would be; 6.5 Grendal, .300 Blackout, 6.8SPC, 7.62x39mm, 7.62x40 Wilson Tactical, .22 Nosler, .25 Sharps, .50 BeauoWolf; .458 Socom, 5.45x39mm, the list can get quite long, and that is off the top of my head. I am sure I missed several, including .22LR, 9mm, .45acp, 10mm, .40S&W, 7.62x25 Tokarov, yep I know I am missing several.

First AR should always be a 5.56mm.

The other calibers are either expensive (like .300 BLK) or have bolt break issues (like any of the rifle rounds with a case bigger than 5.56mm).

I looked at .300 BLK for awhile, and while it is cool, it doesn't seem to offer much that an AK doesn't, except for the platform. In subsonic, it's not really that much better than 9mm, and 9mm is a lot cheaper and a lot lighter.

If I were going to get an AK other than 5.56mm, it would be a 9mm and I'd run it suppressed. But for a first AR, you should just get a 5.56mm.

I have an AR10A4 in 762X51.....very accurate , and no problems yet.

I should have clarified the AR-15. The AR-10 has a larger upper receiver so it has a bigger bolt that was designed for a heavier round. It should have no issues shooting bigger bullets. It would make more sense to make the 7.62x39mm and 6.5 Grendal ARs on a AR-10 base platform. Using the AR-15 will never work out well.

Well they don't make the 6.5 Grendal yet, but CMMG's 'Mutant' is a hybrid AR-10/15 (kind of halfway maybe) that uses the 7.62x51 bolt for 7.62x39, as well as a modified lower for use with AK magazines. A lot more boltface material left vs. a modified AR-15 5.56 bolt. Much less chance of breakage.
