Wife got this on here desktop. What is the best way to get rid of it? She has malwarebytes and spybot running on her computer so I do not know where this came from. Thanks

When was the last time the definitions were updated? That's a pop-up scam. You will have to open the Task manager and close the browser from within. It is not usually dangerous unless you have a particularly nasty scam artist working.

Run CCleaner afterwards and you should be good to go.

been a while. In the process of updating them now. I believe that when the norton that came with the box ran out we did not update anything. I have tried all the online hints but nothing shows up in extensions of addons. Anyway when the defender is done up dating will do a scan and see if something pops up.

It probably won't, but it's always wise to to run it to be sure.

It's more of a scare tactic to extort money out of the ignorant while not really breaking anything on your computer. They rely on people not knowing anything about Windows or their computer to scam you out of money.

You were right it did not find anything even after updating defender and spybot. According to some site this modifies the web browser and could lead to numerous issues and possibly identity theft. Anyway some recommend using "spy hunter" to entirely remove it. Anyone know if this is a good program or not?

Yeah, this sounds very similar to what happened to me a week ago after clicking a link on a website. Turns out all you have to do it right click on your start menu and click task manager, then end task by closing that browser. That's what got rid of mine. To be safe, always run a full system scan with your antivirus and whatever other malware killing software you have.

SpyHunter is a a good and reliable antivirus utility. It is free to detect and scan malware, trojans, rootkits and other infected files on your system, but to unlock the full features you will need to use the registered version.
Here is a post about similar tech support scams and you can also get this antivirus program for free version from there.

This sounds like something that happened to me Sept. of 2014. A screen jumped out and WARNING WARNING your computer has been corrupted yada yada yada... So I crash dived my pc. That's what I call it when I turn it off the Hard Way instead of the Right Way. I ended up calling a computer tech who comes right to my place and had my rig all fixed inside of 30 minutes. Cost me less than $35.

The scammers really do their darndest to scare the crap out of folks saying the FBI has been informed blah blah blah. FBI huh??? FBI can't even keep their OWN house clean. Best Buy runs what I would call a similar scam. Fell for that once to the tune of roughly what a new laptop would run me. So BB don't see one red cent of my moolah no more.

Good to hear your issues were resolved.
