Default AR-10 Family.....

anybody else own one, and if so what type?

For myself I got a DPMS one with a 16 inch barrel so far. Still trying to decide if I want to rebarrel it with one longer or maybe just a second complete top end.

I have a DPMS Panther AR-10 with 16" barrel, this is the low profile receiver version not the tall version. I am considering rebarreling it with an 18" barrel. I prefer a 18" for 7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester).

Good choice. I agree RE the 7.62x51 and barrel length options.

WMD weapons has one that is all nickle boron, dealer was 999.00 last time I looked at it. (It comes less stocks. Stocks are cheap.) I would highly recommend. Building one is a pain in the ass. Many parts are not completely compatible.

It would be cool if they made an AR-10 in 5.56mm.

Are the only AR10's Armalite? Guessing by family you are including all .308 AR's?

If so I have a Troy and a HK MR762SD.

AR stands for Armalite rifle, so AR10 and .308 AR is the same thing. There are a lot of .308 direct impingement rifles though, which a lot of people call ARs.

Now Colt did buy the name AR-15, which still stands for Armalite Rifle, but Colt can use it legally.

I have a ban style AR10 with carry handle and 20" barrel (no muzzle device). It is a nice shooting gun but I have not shot it in years.
Thx-Ace

Now the $64 question, what magazines does it take?

Proprietary like the early Armalite, FAL mags, or the new Magpul ones, or whatever?

My Troy takes LR/SR DPMS style magazines.

My H&K MR762SD take proprietary H&K magazines.

My Armalite mfg rifle takes the modified M14 style mags. I have some Armalite and some modified M14 mags. Both style work well but I prefer the modified M14 mags because they also work in my M1A. Thx-Ace

The reason I bought my DPMS is because it takes the Magpul magazines. I am funny in that I have a self rule of having a MINIMUM of 20-25 mags for every fighting type rifle I own. With DPMS/Magpul I do not have to take a 2nd loan out on the house to afford the mags for it. LOL

ArmaLite was the first real successful commercial AR10 but hit during the ban. This is why they chose the M14 modified magazine. The other type rifles pretty much all use the Stoner design (DPMS, Magpul, etc). AR10 magazines, real Stoners were stupid expensive but not so much now that pesky ban is gone. The KAC rifle was out there too but was not as affordable as the ArmaLite gun. DPMS came along with their butt ugly but super cheap and accurate .308 AR. I do like the newer style receivers they use. Those cast things were super homely.

I bought a S&W several years ago at FT Rucker. LEO model, have not fired a round through it yet but I buy magazines for it. Nice looking gun. They had a nice rebate and the PX had a nice sale on them as well.

Does anyone remember the Hesse .308?
