Re: What use is a bayonet?

For those who were trained with it, it instills in the infantryman the ability to close with and destroy the enemy. This fact has not been lost on the British who did a bayonet charge on a numerically superior force in 2005 when ambushed. The charge broke the will of the enemy to stand and fight.

Unfortunately I have herd that the US Army is dropping this in training leaving the Marines as the only one teaching the use of this weapon.

Besides being a weapon it is a useful utility tool.

I' ve had a certain ammount of training and experience with sharp steel.... gotta concur with an earlier post stating " on some but not ALL rifles"....of course, for me a good barong or a Khukri makes for a good " muti usage tool".

Re: What use is a bayonet?

I trained with the M14 in basic and a blade on the end of that long rifle was very useful during training/ drills. Later on the M16 not so much but necessary because the bad guys always had them. I never served in combat but would have carried a bayonet and my KBAR had I been deployed I have blades for all my rifles that can mount them, The most ompressive is the long bay's on my Springfield and Garand's. Mauser's and Mosin's are bad also. My favorite is this 18" blade I have that came with a M48 Mauser. It could also be a short sword. Very impressive. I recall scenes sequnces from ZULU and We Were Soldiers that seemed pretty realistic portrayals of CQB with bayonets. Someone should figure out how to mount a SOG Tigershark on an M4. Now that would be a handy multi- tool.
God,grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can,and the wisdom to know the difference.

I kept a M1 carbine beside the bed for years with bayonette attached.
If 30 rounds of .30 caliber was not enough I still had a pointy thingy and steel buttplate to work with.

I keep a bayonet on an M 1 Carbine for much the same reason.

ABOVE and beyond all of what has been posted, it has psychological value far beyond its reach or value just by being there.

              not everybody has been shot.

                Call me Bayonet Guy.

When confronted with 6 unarmed crazies one will be crazy enough to charge you even if you're armed, once they've worked themselves up. Odds are one will reach you.

With your friend Mr. Bayonet (especially a long spiky one) it is possible to put said crazies to flight with a few aggressive stabs below the waist (thigh, crotch, belly button).

As they flee give one a round in the dooky hole.

I make a point of carrying a rifle in my trunk. What if the shtf while you're at Homedepot and you have to drive 20 miles home through GKW? What if they are stopping vehicles and impounding weapons?

I don't want them taking one of my first line rifles, and I wouldn't leave one in my trunk - so this trunk gun is a cheap military bolt with a bayonet. If the 20 rounds I stow with it go bad I still have the pigsticker.

Re: What use is a bayonet?

IF you swap out the Bayonet for a good up close and personal knife there are lots of reasons and uses.
Most of the bayonets I have ever handled or used just didn't have the blade quality for what I considered my missions to be. The grind was wrong, the steel wasn't up to par and the balance sucked.

Yeah, you could stick someone with one but not as effectively or efficiently as some other choices.

But in a balls to the wall hand to hand live or die I would find a way to stick and kill you with a rat or a sand bag.

This must be one of the threads where I missed out on all of the cool times. I will be frank, a bayonet is about the only after market thing I ever let hang off my weapons. I'll go with Lawcop on this because yes, long pointy things off the end of a barrel will get noticed!!!

I never used the rat... but a sand bag beats a fist in any fight and you would be amazed the velocity you can get up when it seems like the thing to do plus it made an Ali punch look like a love tap.

I wish they made a K.98k length bayonet for the G3. That would be an attention getter.

I certainly is on the K.98k

Lewis Millet used one in the last bayonet charge of the US Army in Korea.

                                http://www.pbs.org/weta/americanvalo...s/millett.html

He was a fixture at Southern California military events a few decades ago. Fortunate enough to meet him. My Company Commander recommended About Face and LM was mentioned in it.

                                Official Citation:
Captain Millett, Company E, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action. While personally leading his company in an attack against a strongly held position he noted that the 1st Platoon was pinned down by small-arms, automatic, and antitank fire. Captain Millett ordered the 3d Platoon forward, placed himself at the head of the two platoons, and, with fixed bayonet, led the assault up the fire-swept hill. In the fierce charge Capt. Millett bayoneted two enemy soldiers and boldly continued on, throwing grenades, clubbing and bayoneting the enemy, while urging his men forward by shouting encouragement.
