  • Reload Berdan Ammunition

There are lots of interesting Youtube videos on how to do it to include:
    1. Decapping Berdan primers
    2. Converting Boxer primers to Berdan (take out anvil)
    3. Convert Berdan cup to Boxer

    and others

And there are Berdan primers available:

If you consider the price of brass, this might be useful

I've collected up a fair quantity of GP-11 7.5 Swiss brass and 8mm, but I haven't done much with it yet.

The thought of drilling it out did go through my head, because it'd be a whole lot easier to re-process on a repeated basis that way. OTOH, you still have to get the Berdan primers, because they are different sizes than the U.S. standard large or small rifle primers are.

Given the current unreliability of the source, (It usually being Russia) if I were going to pursue it seriously, I'd get at least a couple of cases of them just so I had enough to keep me going if the supply dried up.

But yes, it is a good idea overall.

Jefferson did you watch the video at the link? He goes over the primer size issue and shows how to adapt the primer pocket using a copper tube and primer pocket swagger. Pretty neat really and as has been mentioned a great way to save money and reuse brass.

I've converted 7.62x39 Yugo berdan brass into boxer brass, but instead of enlarging the primer pocket, making and pressing a bushing into it, I made the pocket smaller instead. I placed a larger (3/8) ball bearing on top of the pocket and hit it with a ball peen hammer to swage the hole smaller. I think it was easier.

I deprimed exactlly the same way, water in the case and a 1/4" socket driver.

There are hydraulic Berdan decappers from someone on eBay, search for "berdan decapper".

I just bought the .308 decapper.

I've heard the can opener type decappers work pretty well. I've got 100 Berdan primers but never got around to trying to load anything with them.

Just tried this out and it works pretty good. Comes with some instructions and theory of operation, etc. Can work for Boxer ammo with tiny pockets. There are some brass that have primers really in there with big crimps which may need some heat treatment before operation. But most of my berdan primers came out without a hitch. I also tried looking in the hardware store for various rods to punch thru to no avail. There was some berdan brass which the rodd could fall thru when inserted and this is way too loose, you need the rod to be a little tiny bit too big for this to work properly.

Powder Valley still has Berdan primers, although Grafs just sold out.
