Question

Found my long lost DD217 and it's in bad shape...oil or something on it.

At my age it isn't needed, but I would like to have a neat one.

Where do I go? Thanks

I am sure you can get a new DD214, but I don't know about a DD217.

I can't help ya, but I would like to know too.

Just do a Google search on "replacement DD214" and there're lots of options. Everything from an address to apply for a replacement to services that will speed it up, for a fee.

I've never heard of a DD217. Must have been well before my time.

Re-enlist, then, after awhile, you will get a new one, all clean and no oil stains.

The process on this site was quite painless to complete: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html . It does require printing a signature form and mailing or faxing it to St. Louis.
Another document I read indicated that it can take several weeks for the documents to be sent.

There are two locations they are kept at. One is at the archives site at St Louis that was previously mentioned and the second is at your home state of record at their war records office.

Thusly if you enlisted an listed Ky as your home of record then they will have a copy at Ky's war records office.

HW... DD217 is the little card with discharge status on it. Mine can still be read, but is kinda touchy.

Just as a note. Once you get your new one take both, (214 & 217), to your local courthouse and have them made a part of the public record. It costs nothing, or didn't when I did it anyway, and you can go in anytime there after and have a certified copy made. These have cost me $1 each. I've done it several times over the years, and it's come in handy at times.
Good luck.

P.S. All of the above suggestions are great, and I suspect they will all work given a bit of time. If you're in a real hurry, your local VA rep may be able to help as well.

Well, the link I provided did not say anything about DD Form 217s, but there is a comment space provided for additional instructions--I presume one could ask for that form by number there. I don't remember ever getting one--is it an Army thing? I didn't get anything useful with a Yahoo! search for it, either.

Might be a Marine Corps thing????

As I stated, I'm far enough in life I doubt I'll ever need it again (I did once upon a time).

And....I'm in no hurry whatsoever.

Noting the dates of your service, perhaps the DD217 was given out when military folks separated back then (1963) but they stopped doing it before my first separation (1975)? I had 2 separations--one in 1975 after 15 years commissioned service (RIF for no promotion) and a later one in 1980 when I separated as an enlisted prior to retirement as a Captain.
