My computer is running really slow lately. I ran housecall and malware bytes and they didn't find anything. I have senentec endpoint on the machine, a year old Dell laptop running XP. What should I look for and do to clean it up?

first thing to do is hit control alt delete to get the task manager up then click the processes tap at the top and watch to see what is eating all your cpu write the exact name of it down and post it here also Google it see what you find. there will most likely be one process that is hammering your cpu so hard and it will show up in the processes section of the task maniger because the cpu use number will be at or near 100% all the time.

Go to "start" click "Run" type "msconfig" hit enter go to start up and that will show you what is running when you start your box.
Most of the stuff you can turn off. That will speed things up. karl |

Instead of using msconfig, I like going directly to the services GUI. I disable the services I don't need and set some to manual for those programs I don't use often. How long have you had Symantec EndPoint on your sys..?? I know from experience, in a large network, that EndPoint installs another driver/add-on, for your NIC on the Client side. An Engineer & I discovered that when we disabled this extra driver, the client communicated much faster with the network (server). We discovered that when we disabled it, it had no adverse affects on either client or server side and did not affect the way EndPoint protected the rest of the network. We discovered that this driver was the actual resource hog which in turn, made it harder for other services to work properly and thus pushing said services and CPU harder. I do not have EndPoint installed on any of my boxes, so I cannot give you the name of this driver, but you should be able to identify it within the properties of your NIC. Try disabling the driver and monitor the function of EndPoint to ensure proper operation (updates, scaning....etc). HTH although late.

You can try Comodo System Cleaner.
It couldn't hurt.

It is DEFINITELY time for a drastic UPGRADE......if you are still on XP!!!!!!! ![]() Vista......Windows 7.......??????

my laptop is 6 years old and has a 40 Gb hard drive and 2mb ram (I think) I don't think it could handle vista.
I sat out vista completely, I don't want to buy a new computer as long as my old one works. If I can hold on a few more years I'll be ready for a new one when windows 8 comes out and they change everything around again for no reason. Besides, I don't want to have to lean a whole new set of macros and all new versions of programs. My biggest beef with all the updated programs is that they have so many auto correct and auto format functions built in that I spend hours just turning them off because the program thinks I don't know how to write. If I have to do all that I might as well switch to linex or mac.

I had XP for many years ISC......but eventually, it just wouldn't work anymore......
I would click on a U-tube video, and it would be choppy.......I couldn't even view it........ I even "upped" my RAM.......but to no avail. I FINALLY broke down, and bought a new computer with Windows 7........ It has been like day and night!!! NO problems, or quirk's, whatsoever....... Computers are just like cars.......they figure out ways, to get you to finally, buy a NEW one, every 10 years or so......... ![]() Processor speed is the "BIG" one now-a-days.........even more than what RAM....used to be..........

i have a over 10 year old computer with windows xp as my main computer it works fine. although it has been reformatted and the O/S reinstalled about 2 years ago. microsoft is still issuing updates for xp so it is still a very viable operating system.
how many programs do you have running at boot up?? how little icons show up on the lower right next to the clock after everything is all booted up?? you mite have to expand it out and count them if there is allot. having more than 4 or so can really slow things down, one for your anti virus/firewall, and like 3 for miscellaneous programs of your choice. if you have like 10 that is definitely your problem and you need to turn some junk off. to do that you can hunt through each program to turn off start on boot. if they let you or you can follow Karl's method just be careful what you are turning off some stuff in there is sorta important. |

another thing for older computers is that allot of times these wizz bang antivirus/firewalls that they charge money for are just to bloated for the older machines with limited resources for instance my isp at&t provides me with a free copy of there rebranded version of mcafee security suit for free as long as i have there dsl. i do not use it as it is so bloated and such a resource hog that it would slow my fleet of old computers to a crawl. i use avast antivirus free version instead it is much more light weight but still effective.
